Eric Sande says:

The ’03 we bought has only 80,000 miles on it from the original owner so
I’m comfortable with some repairs, being that we got it for ~$1,300 below
KBB.

Eric Sande says:

How long had you had this problem before fixing it? I wondering if a gunky
EGR can do damage or just lessens performance. I just bought a low mileage
’03 Protege5 for well under KBB from a friend. The Check light is on and
I’m going to replace the EGR but can’t do it for another week and my wife
needs the car to get around town.

Eric Sande says:

Thanks for your reply. Our car is currently running fine, though it has a
“drone” (for lack of a better word) when at stop lights. My wife said it
purrs if she puts it in Neutral. A local Autozone has the part in stock for
~$130.

Christopher Waldegar says:

Yeah that is the start of it when you are at lights. I got to the point
where I had to put in neutral and rev the engine. On amazon I got min for
50 but i had to get one day shipping which made it to almost a hundred but
it was still a lot cheaper than autozone.

Christopher Waldegar says:

I had this problem for a month. Random stalling out and terrible gas
mileage. After awhile my check engine light went on and my car would stall
out no matter what. Replacing was easy just make sure you have a flex head
ratchet. It shouldn’t cause long term damage. But I had to reset my
computer to register the new part. You can find a new part on amazon for
cheap also. But I’d go to autozone to make sure it is your EGR valve.

Christopher Waldegar says:

Jackie I went to autozone and I got a flex head ratchet that I think was a
quarter inch and I had to use an extension to get enough leverage to crank
it off it is a pain to get off but easy to put the new one on!

Jackie Nole says:

. Hi – I am having the exact same problem and I cannot get the EGR out to
clean it; I cannot get the leverage to get the bolts off. If you don’t mind
– what kind of flexible socket wrench did you use? There are several
different styles on amazon and I’d like to know what you used. (And thanks
to Johnnysshop for the video)

Johnnysshop says:

Nice, great to hear!

Christopher Waldegar says:

Yeah I just got a flexible socket wrench and I finally was able to swap out
my old EGR valve for a new one. The old one was completely gone when I went
to go clean it out the valve was stuck half way but I got a new one from
amazon for just under a hundred bucks it would have been cheaper if I
didn’t need next day shipping. But now my car is running real smooth no
stalling out or anything! Thanks for the video and the help!

Johnnysshop says:

Hmm.. Should just be a normal metric socket set. Are the stripped out of
rusted on?

Johnnysshop says:

Hmm.. Yeah, you might want to try a GearWrench if you can get it in there.
They can be tough to take out, just gotta work out your thumbs.

Christopher Waldegar says:

Also what is the best tools to get it off I tried for a couple hours with
my socket wrench with no luck any suggestions?

Christopher Waldegar says:

They aren’t stripped maybe a tad rusted on but I just couldn’t get the
leverage with my socket to get the bolts out. I was thinking maybe my
socket wrench was too big and maybe I should get a socket wrench that could
pivot so I could get more leverage.

Johnnysshop says:

You could try it, wouldn’t hurt.

Bethany Audette says:

lmao i got tape on my hose as well..seems to be holding up

Johnnysshop says:

I doubt it. It could be a exhaust leak, airbox leak, alternator whine, fan,
etc… Could be just about anything really. You’d have to narrow down the
approx area it was coming from first.

Johnnysshop says:

LOL.. I don’t have any other vids at the moment. This vid was from the
beginning of June.

Johnnysshop says:

I would replace the hose before you do anything, the tape may not be a
sufficient seal. I would get the codes read at auto parts store.

asianmike08 says:

hi johnny! my protege’s rpm goes up and down during idle do you think this
will solve the problem? Thank you.

Johnnysshop says:

Thanks for watching!

marla cortes says:

your video helped alot

HISROYLFRSHNESS says:

Does the egr gasket need to be “wet” installed and do the bolts have a
torque or is it just good and tight? Thanks for your help and love your
vids.

Bethany Audette says:

also i need to fix this on my car but dont really think this vid helped as
much i only know the location now but dont know how to remove it etc what
tools to use

Johnnysshop says:

LOL.. I have other things to take care of 🙁

Casey Nakayama says:

You’re having per-igition in your cylinders. If you remove the spark plugs
you’ll probably notice that the top of your cylinders are coated with a lot
of carbon. I have the same issue. Its stems from worn out valve bushing and
you motor is burning oil. The only way to fix it is with a head rebuild. It
happens over time because most bushings are just made from brass. I’d take
your car to a mechanic that deals with Head rebuilds and they can diagnose
it better for you… Just my .10 Cents.

hello mr john .. i bought mazda protege 323 2002 model …. its fuel
consumption is very high its about 20L per 100Km and its engine is just
1600cc … can you help me to know how to make the fuel consumptiom low as
like as mitsubishi lancer or toyota yaris .. thanks for helping

Johnnysshop says:

Yeah, this one was corrected after the EGR.

Johnnysshop says:

LOL.. I don’t have any other vids at the moment. This vid was from the
beginning of June.

Bethany Audette says:

how do i know whether or not i need to clean it or replace it completely?
btw watched the vid that explained pcv and plug video and i was abloe to do
it myself..

Christopher Waldegar says:

If I just clean out the EGR valve will it fix the error code and the
problem? I can’t afford a new part…
