Just did my 03′ 2.0L and there is no way to drop it out the bottom unless the exhaust pipe and large crossmember is removed and axle is in the way.must be different from the 1.8L.Very easy to remove it from the top.I made a video and put it on here of after it was pulled and then replaced.May want to change your title to about being for the 03′ since they have the 2.0L

Joe Anderson says:

2003 its easier taking it out the top, just move some of those cables around

PhDBosniaN says:

i understand you changed your bad alternator too, but if i just want to change the belts…do i have to loosen all those botls or can i just do that through the tenioner bolts?

pigjamelectric says:

Only problem I ran into was having to cut the rusty exhaust studs to move the pipe off to the side to give enough room to drop the alternator. The elbow is so rusty it needs replacing so the pipe is holding on to it with rebar wire now. Going to need to visit a muffler shop. Anyhow, you did save us a lot of money on the how-to. Thanks for the vid.

MrLuckybug says:

Alright, after some work, I replaced the alternator from the TOP!! Just push it through the pipe, you may need to play around it for room. Anyway. Now the problem is: my B terminal cable is also rusted and it came right off from the alternator with nut on it. The B terminal on alternator was burned into carbon(or whatever it was). So I need to figure out a way to clean it out then reattach it to alternator. Just wondering what if my B terminal cable is bad? Like if it melted….

Vid author replied 7mo ago to Francois Kleynhans: “as you are laying on your back looking up at the car from underneath i finagled it out toward the drives side near the exhaust J-pipe. rotated it a couple times till i came out. It is a very tight fit.”
I own a ’02 Protege5 w/ 2.0L. Turn it around a little. I think mine came out w/ bolt ears straddling a beam or pipe.. prob the exhaust. Will try to change the oil this wknd and will try to take a picture with the old alt before returning.

MrLuckybug says:

I am wondering how did you actually take the thing out of the car? I am trying to do it from the bottom but I don’t think it will come out without removing other parts. Any suggestion? Thanks

MrLuckybug says:

Do you own 2003 mazda protege? It seems no way to get it out from bottom without removing any other part. Any suggestion? Thanks

MrLuckybug says:

Hi I am doing exactly the same work. I wondering the same thing, how do it take it out? Mine dropped to very bottom but stuck there. Any suggestions?

they are all just about the same engine. It is the same idea and shouldnt be that different.

newyota1 says:

Your title states for a 1999-2003, but your description says 1999-2000.Which is it?The 03 has a 2.0l engine.

Keith Healy says:

Thanks mate ,exactly what I was looking for

How did you get the Alt. out?Appears to be no room to drop it out of my 03′.Need to do this job soon.Thought yo were showing how to drop it out unless it’s that easy.thanks

Your Welcome! Glad it helped.

mdavidson2183 is my new hero. This video explained the procedure easily; so even a brick like me could do it. I spent $20 on the belts, instead of about $200 for parts & labor. Thanks a ton!

JessesYuToob says:

I replaced the alt from the bottom as you said. I saw some other video which mentioned moving stuff from the top which would have been too much work and would have left it to a mechanic. Thanks for your video. You save me about $100 labor.

DjAlmend says:

that’s cute

r bull says:

you just saved me a ton of money thanks

MrTHEeliminater says:

hey how tight should u have the belts ?

JessesYuToob says:

I just saw your reply to Francois Kleynhans which means I should be able to do it myself. Thanks for the video.

JessesYuToob says:

Is it possible to remove the alt without removing any other parts connected to the engine like mounts, driveshafts, etc.? Thanks

Alec Richter says:

Thanks for the help, much appreciated

This was a great source of info for me – thank you very much.

DjAlmend says:

I have an issue with coolant leaking right above where the oil pan is, its coming around the main pulley that has both drive belts on it.

Is there anything there that would be leaking coolant, or need i search higher up?

Thank you.

Thomas Kelly says:
