Did you expect anything less from a 70’s British car? Especially a *cheap*70’s British car? Lol.

Sorta makes me nervous about pursuing an abandoned lotus europa I found

Kanaric says:

i would like that lotus europa quite a bit, they are inexpensive too. ugly
though, lol but that is part of the charm to me.

Kevin Cranston says:

That looks beautiful going too bad the running gear is crappy, if you can
afford a modern update it would be worth it for me

Gavin Tookey says:

What do you expect for 600 quid?. All the faults you describe are the
result of neglect by a previous owner and not the fault of Lotus. Well,
putting a foam pad over the chassis rear cross member was a bad idea so
I’ll give you that one :). The engine is extremely well engineered and well
ahead of it’s time. The styling is too a select taste. Did you know that
this car will out handle an Esprit of the same vintage?. The Esprit was the
looker from the Lotus stable but Chapman much preferred the éclat/elite for
the driving performance. Unfortunately you can not drive a Lotus like a
Honda or Toyota. Services must be done on time and if neglected the car
will suffer. This is the main reason for the unfounded reputation of Lotus.
Keep up with the scheduled maintenance and the car(s) are reliable. I have
a 1977 Esprit S1, owned it for 5 years and has never let me down. The
engineering is simple and well suited to a DIY mechanic. Your car just
needs a few weekends of elbow grease – shocks, steering u joint and a must
is a timing belt. And get some screws for that airbox. Nothing major and
all inexpensive. If the chassis is good then you got a deal at 600. Enjoy
and don’t listen to the naysayers.
