Dean Amine says:

My question for David: what is your outlook on the risk of the opposite
happening? What are the prospects for malevolence, will we ever stamp it
out, and if we do, will we ever be sure it won’t resurface? This seems like
THE most important question when considering the future because of the
capability to do the exact opposite of engineering heaven. We could equally
create hell, say by programming ASI to perpetually maximize suffering for
everyone or specific people, and this sort of suffering would be, of
course, orders of magnitude worse than anything Earth has ever known. I’d
love to be convinced that we shouldn’t just blow ourselves up right now to
prevent even the possibility of such an intolerable outcome.

Tristan Curry says:

Even if you don’t care about the animals in the factory farms, there is
still the fact that by purchasing the meat you are perpetuating a system
that overproduces GMO crops in order to feed said animals, then subsidizes
those highly environmentally destructive mono-culture farms, then proceeds
to dispose of the excess grain by concentrating it in the myriad of
processed food products in our grocery stores. Meanwhile, 1 out of 7 people
in the world are starving, who could be fed simply by redistributing the
food from animals to humans. So the best solution is to just not eat meat,
don’t support starvation!

I love this guy so much!!!

extropian314 says:

(I rewrote the comment to keep things in a straight line). Agreed, even
1%-likelihood for pigs is plenty enough to act as though they experience,
until we know better. I for-one couldn’t defend solipsism, because the
likelihood that these other nearly-identical people also experience like me
is quite high, and therefore worth taking seriously, just as for pigs.

josephaugustus says:

Call me if you wana talk about how we can end suffering once and for all
and make everyone happy happy. 914 837-1374

sharpezor says:

ugh, I enjoy your videos Adam, I always have and I appreciate you putting
them up here. You’re a good fellow but I have to protest the out of place
inclusion of some kind of rock band (I assume it’s you?) going at it in
between points. It doesn’t match the content in the slightest and I think
David deserves something at least slightly related. It’s your video this is
but the modest opinion of a single devoted viewer.

John Robinson says:

No dead space. Excellent. 🙂

extropian314 says:

Exactly; but I have only limited time and resources, to research and to try
to change myself and things around me. If you look at my previous comment,
I explain exactly why I see probably not-much suffering at all occurring at
factory farms. Let’s not forget all other forms of preventable human
suffering, and also that humans have a richer inner-experience which
probably includes any suffering that they experience. All this is cautious,
educated guesswork; not yet established science.

Stupidxxxx says:

Even if you think that factory farming isn’t that bad (I think you’re
wrong, obviously), i.e. not eating meat does not take up any time or
resources, so that argument doesn’t hold. The idea that human’s have larger
capacities for suffering is complete guesswork. Even if a pig could only
suffer 1/100 the amount a human can (a ludicrous idea), the ethical problem
would still be enormous, if you do the math. Again, noone is asking to
´forget´ human suffering, that’s a complete strawman.

sharpezor says:

Well, thanks for the reply. I was just pointing out another possibility,
didn’t want to annoy you.

gnargnar head says:

OK I’m giving up this is going to be way to much effort, but i also must
say i think hes completely overlooking marijuana when referring to “street
drugs” and the more natural approach of dreaming and associated experiences
including near death experiences, i will once again say i appreciate this
videos i found it to be refreshing, i feel that my time would be better
directed to my nachos and music rather than continuing..so ill leave you
with this do plants not feel? draw a line ahHA!ahahaha!

josephaugustus says:

How do I talk to this guy

Christopher Jannette says:

Hey! I saw that same number written in a bathroom stall.

extropian314 says:

I’m just talking about my own life, and becoming vegetarian would indeed
require some work and change.. new lifestyle, for me. I’d be interested in
what kind of animal suffering you think occurs at farms or factory-farms?
Animals there seem pretty okay to me, as long as they have food. (They
aren’t bothered by feelings like lack-of-freedom as humans are). I agree
with your math; however I feel that a human’s suffering from a typical
crime or in war is far greater than a pig’s on a fac.farm.

Adam Ford says:

Responding to your feedback did not mean I was annoyed dude 🙂

sexpen says:

wow . . . superb interview <3 such a beautiful entity David is! I HAVE ONE
WORD specie: TRANCE-TERRESTRIAL ; )

gnargnar head says:

interesting though i feel compelled to say i disagree with just about
everything he said, still you have my thanks a great video

deanmullen10 says:

17:22 In theory could some drug addicts somewhere have come up with the
resolutions for some of the greatest problems in the world but couldn’t put
it into words? haha

deanmullen10 says:

He is on facebook I believe, check out effective altruism and
utilitarianism as groups on facebook too, they’re cool and he’s involved,
but he has a facebook account.

Stupidxxxx says:

@deleted comment: Right. It’s an argument of analogy, not a proof by
analogy. Your point however could just as well be made to defend solipsism.
In the end, (as you mention) it doesn’t really matter if you’re 99% certain
or only 50% certain that pigs are sentient – in either case the current
factory farming practices demand immediate intervention.

extropian314 says:

I have, mostly with farm animals, many of whom are mammals and some of the
most advanced lifeforms. This leaves out monkeys and apes, and for me
there’s no question that they feel. By all means, please explain, including
which parts you agree with from your experience.

John Robinson says:

I actually agree with roughly 75% of what he said. (But I’m probably just a
biased optimist.) That said, really well done cinematography (except for
the dead space at the end). You’re obviously improving day by day.

Stupidxxxx says:

It’s an argument of analogy. Evolution has given us certain needs in order
to maximise our fitness (let’s not go into what they are, but they surely
would be frustrated by living in a minimum-sized cage 24/7), and if they go
unfulfilled we become sad or depressed. There is no good reason to think
that the same isn’t true for other animals. I would suggest to look up some
documentary information about factory farming. I can’t suggest any in
particular, since I’ve been vegan for a long time.

electrichealinghand says:

Interesting, because I think I agree with almost everything he said. I
would be interested to hear what you disagree with and why?

otakurocklee says:

The suffering that animals experience in factory farms and slaughter houses
is staggering. If you really want to know what it is like, there are videos
online. I can’t stomach watching them. The greatest suffering that exists
on earth… I would contend, is that inflicted by humans upon animals in
these factory farms and slaughter houses.

Stupidxxxx says:

Bacteria unlikely, insects unlikely but not impossible, fish likely. Good

Adam Ford says:

I thought that the ambient electronic band footage worked well especially
with the background projections.
