Lincoln AC225 Welder Restoration Repair Test

Lincoln AC225 Welder Restoration Repair Test

I bought this welder on craigslist for $100, I was specifically looking for an older unit because I was reading there were built better then the newer units. The old welders had copper winding’s VS aluminum. Its also came with about $100 for a very think power cable.

Mike Jones says:

When buying an older welder, you might want to look at 'duty cycle'. The biggest enemy of a welding machine, esp an older one is HEAT. A higher duty cycle, say 80% – 90% at 100amps or so will net you a machine that will not generate nearly as much heat as a machine with a 20% @ 100A. Put a good fan in it when you get it. A 4 1/2" computer type fan will push way more air than the one in the welder, if it has one. A lot of older buzz boxes didn't even have fans. If it has a fan that works, clean it and lube it with 30wt oil (WD40 is NOT lubricant) and if you can, make a fan shroud for it out of metal flashing or sonotube/ mailing tube etc. Just about any fan will move more air with a shroud. Make sure it doesn't move TOO much air, it may overheat the fan motor by making it pull more amperage.

I just bought a Lincoln 185 amp at auction, $ 48.00. Paper inside said built in 1959. Still works but only at 185 amp, turn the switch down below that and nothing. Anyone have any idea on whats wrong with it ?

Joe Drager says:

35" cable seems awfully long. If they've been lengthened, it'll screw up your amperage adjustments.

Watch out my friend create a fire in the walls. Make sure the wire carrying the two phase heavy enough if you using it for long time. Pre heat your rods before using them

Hi. I have an older Lincoln 225 AC/DC stick welder. I turned it on the other day. The welder powered up and ran for about 30 seconds. i was about to strike an arc and the welder suddenly shut off. Hasn't fired up since. Do you know what may have caused this ?

Thank you!

To find out when your welder was made, call Lincoln at (216) 481-8100 and they will ask for the code of your machine and from that they can tell you the year your machine was made.

Found out mine was made in 1977, and is in vary good shape. No rust or dents, great machines.

daniel murphy says:

I have used a buzz box all my life and had to clean the selector quadrant inside but works great. it's over 40 years old and still throws full penetration runs. just have to raise the amps.
