HI Dave, You may want to check for a frayed or broken wire on that circuit. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Dave Bromley says:

I have a 2003 sports trac the rear dirver side brake light and turn sig not working check bulbs & fuses . same for my trailer light . need help please

locoadams says:

before buying the switch, verify the switch moving it forward and back, apparently, the switch eventually suffer a little wear and pressing the brake pedal does not move the switch and not doing their job. I say that after watching the video, check my explorer and moving the switch worked, what I did was fix with a cable and the problem was solved, and I have my brake lights working.

wahoomack2012 says:

I had taken my 99 Explorer to the dealer for an oil change and they did their “complete inspection”. When they told me that my brake lights were bad, they said it would be $200 to go in and check the electrical, but I decided that I’d do the research first. Came across your video and realized this was exactly my issue. Changed the brake switch myself and saved $180! Thanks for the video!

1aauto says:

You may want to see if there are any stored codes in the computer. If there are, it should point you in a direction as to what is triggering the light. Hope this helps you out. Have a great day! 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Sooooo I have a lincoln ls. V6 2005. Now before the ford jokes come.. I know.. lol ..but its a nice car lol… my issue is .. whike driving my e brake light will turn on.. which in turns makes it harder to turn. And also gives ir issues going from a complete stop to go. .. use to be I restart the car it’d go off. Unfortunately that’d not the case any more and it will stay on and come on more often… any suggestons besides blowing it up???

Roger Sherwood says:

absolutely true. I’m experiencing this now. But you CAN shift out of park if you turn the key one notch to unlock the steering wheel and you can then shift out of park to neutral to start the car.

1aauto says:

You could try to, and see if it fixes the issue.

I have a 2003 ford explorer sport trac. My bottom brake lights are not working but the 3rd brake light on my cab is working. Bulbs have been switched. Should i replace the brake light switch?

n310ea says:

Is it true that a faulty brake light switch will prevent you from shifting out of ‘P’ on some Ford models?

USMCBAMF says:

So I do have power running to the sockets. I also replaced all the bulbs just to play it safe. Still nothing. So I guess I will try replacing the stop light relay as well as the multi-function switch. Previously I had worried of lack of power to the brake light switch but realized I should try testing it while applying the brakes. So that’s fine as well. So I’m sure it’s the MFS or Relay.

1aauto says:

You may want to take the bulbs out of the sockets and see if there’s power to the socket when the brakes are applied, and check the wire to the socket to see if it has power. You may have to work you way back through he system with a test light to see at what point you lose power. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

USMCBAMF says:

Great video. I have a 2006 Crown Vic P71. I replaced the brake light switch but they still don’t work. All Fuses are good. Blinkers, emergency lights and running lights all work fine. On the brake switch connection however, there are 5 inlets, of those five, only two (far right and middle) have any power rating on my meter. The wires are all good, and there is no wear on them. Would it be safe to say it’s just the connection to the Brake Light Switch itself? Should all five inlets have power?

1aauto says:

Depending on how much room you have, it may be a little tricky.

C.J. C says:

Great instructions. I replaced the brake light switch on my daughters 1998 mustang GT, but brakes still don’t work.

It looks like the real problem is the wire harness connector that plugs into the brake light switch. It looks corroded w/ loose wires

Is that part difficult to replace?

CJ Grace says:

It was a complete mystery!!! I turned the key to on, pressed on the emergency brake, then lo and behold, the third brake light came on, but not the tail lights in the trunk lid!! So today, I decided to start from the beginning. I rechecked all the fuses, then went back to recheck the wires….that’s when I discovered it….TWO broken wires!!! Now all I need is the tools to fix them! Thank you so much for your help!!!

1aauto says:

Make sure that there’s power to the switch, if there isn’t check the fuse.

CJ Grace says:

Well I replaced the brake light switch….problem still not solved. So, my best guess, I need to replace the wire! What do you think? I’m at my wits end here.

CJ Grace says:

no power. I am currently waiting for the brake light switch to be delivered, and hoping that’s the problem. Thanks.

1aauto says:

Test the power going to the socket in the light. If there’s power to the socket, it could be a bad socket.

CJ Grace says:

A friend of mine has a 99 Mercury Sable Wagon. The third brake light has been out for at least a couple years. The tail lights and backup lights just went out in the trunk lid. Side tail lights work… I replaced the fuses and bulbs..problem not fixed. Could it be trouble with the battery, we have trouble, or the brake light switch?

1aauto says:

It sounds like something could be crossed in the wiring, or check to see if one of the wires coming off of the brake light switch is frayed and is hitting a piece of metal. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

oohweejuicy says:

I changed my brake light switch after findn out my lights wasnt wrkn…it wrked fine bt nw my brake lights cum on even if i dnt press brake n my switch n wire seem warmer den usually…any suggestions

1aauto says:

We currently do not have a brake light switch that fits the 2003 Ford Explorer.

richard ROSTIEN says:

I have an 03 Explorer 4dr xls. I see online 2dr and 4dr switches. the 4dr switch looks like i need to wire in but the 2dr is like the part you use in this video. Is there a difference?

1aauto says:

The issue might be is the wire grounded itself to the body at some point and destroyed the circuit. You might want to bring it to a mechanic and get the problem looked at closer.

kiddoc36 says:

I have a 1997 Ford Tbird. I found I had to brake lights. Running and turn signals all fine. So I changed bulbs since they were old nothing. I swapped the brake switch nothing. All tail lights are fine just no brake lights. I did see the 2 wires to the switch had one broken and one frayed so I clipped off the bad wiring then spliced new lines and switch pigtail in and tested with tester and they seem fine but still not brake lights. Is there a fuseable link in the engine bay fuses inside all good

m0t0x150 says:

wow, same issue and was fixed in a few minutes! thanks

1aauto says:

It may be. You may also want to check the wiring to the brake light switch to see if they are frayed and making contact with a piece of metal or something.

Lydell Humphrey says:

All of my brake lights were out on a 99 Navigator. After turning on the hazard lights and pressing on brake they came back on. Would that be a brake light switch issue?

Juan Munoz says:

no, i have the problem i a 2003 eb. just put some lube around the moving part and you are done.
