If you find your under hood serpentine belt tensioner pulley is squeeking or making odd noises, it’s time to replace it. It’s not difficult, it takes 10 minutes and a few hand tools. This video is of a 2002 Lincoln Continental with a 4.6L V8 engine. Other Ford, Mercury and Lincoln products have the same engine. Some installations with be slightly different due to the type of engine fan and air intake that vehicle has. Some have electric fans others are engine driven clutch fans. Due to design, the air intake might be in the way. The actual tensioner is still replaced the same way.
The main tools you need are a 3/8″ drive ratchet with a 10mm socket and a breaker bar with a 3/8″ square end to take the spring tension off the bracket. If your vehicle needs a new serpentine belt, now is a good time to do it. If you only need to replace your belt, the process is the same, you just don’t remove the tensioner. Good luck.
