suggestion: remove the unloader valve BEFORE taking the pump assembly off
the unit.
1) hook up the hose and turn on the water.
2) remove the cap, 2 torx screws, and white plastic housing.
3) pull the starter cord. The engine doesn’t have to start, just needs to
crank a few pressure waves to pop the valve out the top. :)
I have a Champion CPW1800 (Red) which has exactly the same symptoms as your
example here.
Being a domestic type, mine is powered by an electric motor so there are
quite a few physical differences.
There are only a limited amount of parts available for my PW so I am hoping
it will just be a clean and reassemble.
I don’t really know where to start though! Will I have the same problems
with oil etc?
Do you have any examples of my type?
I would really appreciate your help. I’m in the UK.
do you know how to repair a high pressure hose!?, it leaks from one end.
Thanks for this detailed video. I have the exact same problem on a used
Karcher exactly like this one. I had already disassembled the pump, cleaned
and reassembled but I did not discover that unloader spill valve piston
until watching this video. I am confident I will get mine working tomorrow
after addressing that valve. Everything else looked fine on mine. Thanks a
Lot for the tips.
I have a Power Boss power washer by Briggs and Stratton 2600 with a Honda
engine. When I pull the trigger on the sprayer, it gives a small blast of
water and the pump seizes up and stops the engine. Does anyone have an
answer why this is happening?
This was a huge help. Thanks a ton…
Great video! I got my 10+ year Karcher to run like new again watching this
video.
The main problem I found was the pump oil was practically water. All the
parts held up surprisingly well, no need to replace any. Runs fantastic.
Thank you, Mark!
If you can’t get that spill valve out of the housing count on replacing the
pump if you have a hex drive pump. The replacement housing superseded by a
part that simply does not fit.
Thats well ollustratef information on pressure pum maimtenace
one of the best videos,, but what kind of oil did you put in it ?
some of the best DIY videos on you tube
I’m having this problem and took out the pressure valve and greased it but
I still have the same problem.
A little bit of water got inside oil compartment of my high pressure washer
pump, does still fixable?
I have a greenworks 1700. it keeps shutting off and after a few trys it
blows the breaker.any clue to what may cause this.? thanks
Thanks for the great video, Mark. My Karcher pulsates the high pressure as
you mention. I can see bands where the water hits the cement patio. What
would cause this? Thanks.
Super !
Hi, Ive been looking on here for a while to find a solution for my pressure
washer issue and yours is the closest to it so maybe you can help me. I
have a surging problem only when the gun is engaged. Once I start spraying
the water comes out strong then gets weak, then strong again and weak again
over and over. When I turn the idle higher it does the same thing just at a
faster pace. Once i let go of the trigger, the idle is fine. Any ideas?
I did what you told me in the video and now my engine stopped working it
doesn’t let me even pull the cord to start it like its stuck can you help
me ?
Hey, I love your video but I just can not get that bypass valve out. Could
I maybe drill into it so I could putt it out or should I should bite the
bullet and take it to the repair shop? Thank you so much for this video!
Most pressure washers require the engine to spin at a constant 3400 RPM’s.
If the engine RPM’s are even a few hundred RPM’s too fast or too slow the
pump will not pressurize or the pressure will surge and die. I would check
the RPM’s first. If that tests out OK then you will need to open the pump
to see what has failed. I hope this helps, -Mark
@mrFoos54 It does sounds like the piston seals. Probably the three closest
to the engine. When I rebuild a pump if I find evidence of one set of seals
being worn I will replace both sets. I figure if one set is causing a
problem the other can’t be far behind. Thanks, -Mark
Hi Mark, Great video. I have a Karcher 2500 VH 2.4GPM w/Honda 5.5HP GCV 160
Engine runs great, but it will not build up pressure. If I rev the engine
manually it will eventually build pressure and I can start washing. As soon
as I let go of the “D” handle, I have to rev the engine again to build
pressure. If I tear it down I was hoping to have the right parts to put it
back together right away. Any idea of which valves it may be? Thanks.
I called ereplacementparts and we seem to be having trouble finding a part
number or description. Bypass valve or unloader valve isn’t recognized in
their data base. It looks like I have the exact same pwr washer as in the
video. Do you have anymore ways I can describe the bypass valve or get a
part # ? Thanks
@tudinerito Hi, the pressure washer will not pull water from the river on
its own. It requires a pressurized water source that can provide the pump’s
specified CFM requirement. Using water directly from the river will also
ruin the pressure washer’s pump very quickly. The pump requires clean
water, any sand or sediment in the water will wear the pump’s components
very quickly. Many pro’s even filter house water before it enters the pump.
I hope this helps and thanks for watching. -Mark
Great video! The best way to remove stubborn bypass valve is to remove the
plastic housing and connect the pump to water hose as usual, turn on the
water and start the motor. CAUTION: The valve will fly out so make sure no
one and nothing is in its path. Also be sure to do it in an area when you
will recover the valve.
hi there, I got a big question with a presure washer. im about to buy the
presure washer the cat pump from homedepot i have a farmer that is
surrended by the guarapiche river……the question is if with any pressure
washer can i take the water from the river without using a Pump?. just the
pressure washer a 50ft hose that goes into the river that´s it. will the
pressure washer work? or do i have to buy something else to make it work?
You Sir, are awesome for making this video and others. I’m ordering parts
today for my pwr washer and compressor. Thank You Kindly
i have a new washer 2600psi that i only used a few times. when i first
start the engine, i put it to choke. but when i run the engine lean, the
engine dies every time. is it the engine or the water pump assembly causing
it? thanks.
thanks videos on breakdowns of other models would be helpful like how to
get the cases off of some karcher models mine is a K260M 1890 just getting
inside is a challenge without the proper tools and that would be heplful to
have a tool list check out ifxit for their tutorials I think my problem is
the same with water leaking by as an added diagnostic problem
@th19940305 That being said, the problem is almost certainly caused the
bypass valve (“unloader” valve), like in our video. Thanks for the great
comment and question! We’ll do another pump disassembly when a different
type of pump comes through the shop. The season is almost over and most of
the pressure washers we see are Karcher machines like in the video, so it
may be a while . . .
ahhhhhhh it’s called a spill valve 🙂 Pwr washer is fixed and working fine.
Thanks Mark
This is fantastic.! Almost the same services with Pressure Washing Ashevile
of Asheville Gutter Cleaning and Maintenance. They really do great pressure
washing services in Asheville, NC.!
@eReplacementParts whenever one comes in like maybe a husky or honda do a
video on that
Suberb vid! I’ve been using this great tut to try and repair another brand
of PW that uses the same valves but could you please let me know how you
pulled the valves out without damaging them as the valves on the one I’m
working on seem to be stuck fast with scale/corrosion.
Thats not the pump. Thats the carborator. Get a can of carb spray, remove
the carborator from the engine and take it apart. The jets are most likely
clogged, and just need to shoot some carb spray through them to fix the
issue. I used to manage 20 go karts, and we saw this issue frequently with
our honda GX160 engines.
Excellent video, however when I removed the two halves of the pump from
each other the oil was milky white. Sounds like a bit too much water in the
oil. What seals would be the most apt to be bad, the piston seals and what
is the best way to determine?
Looks like you’ve done a few of these… I take it the zero maintenance
pumps on the vertical engined washers can’t be rebuilt??
I see this video..nice.model are the best
@th19940305 Good question. Most pressure problems lead to the pump. If
you’ve eliminated that the problem isn’t located in the hose, gun, or
nozzle, then you’ll have to disassemble and clean the pump like in the
video. If the cause is something more than just a dirty pump, then
dismantling it and cleaning it should reveal what it is. As for what
exactly might be causing the issue, it could be almost any part in the
pump. Check each part for wear or damage and replace those that need
replacing.
I have a Troy Built washer from back in 04′..It has the same Honda
engine..Some times it cuts out but most time it runs pretty good..I would
like to try and take it apart and clean the pump it has never been check
since I bought it.
mine is a craftsman w/a karcher pump, corroded inside pump, but only parts
through Sears,no model number on pump, just the karcher arrows……..and
some parts are not made anymore, also cost is a lot for O rings and
valves…….well at least $70 +.
I am in debt to you guys. 🙂 Thanks a ton. I received a Karcher 2800OH from
a co worker. It was not building any pressure, regardless of how much
pressure was on the intake hose. With this guide, I Tore down, cleaned and
rebuilt the pump, and it works like a champ now. 🙂 Thanks Guys!!
@eReplacementParts Thanks for the advice. I’ll check it out.
Hi Mark I have a question. I have a briggs N Stratton Engine, 11.5 HP with
a 3300 PSI max water pump. I want to increase the max PSI. Is it possible
to replace the pump with one that has a higher max PSI output without
replacing the engine as well? I am hoping that I could just pop it off and
put on a new one or just raplace the pump heads. thanks, Mike.
