Welding with one of these on a wet spring day in front of your garage with a very old electrode holder or wet gloves changing electrodes. Anyone remember what happens?
I gotta say this and I'm sure 50 others have before. It's an AC welder. While one lead may come as "ground" it doesn't matter. It only matters on AC/DC where it also has a polarity switch. Nice video though!
The grommet for the 220V power cord "disappeared" during the reassembly… You might want to "find" it so that you don't eventually find out what sort of sparks 220VAC makes when a metal chassis edge wears through the power cord…
Knowing virtually nothing about circuitry myself, I wanted a welder that is easy to maintain, or better yet (almost) never have to maintain because it is such a simple powerhouse. Learned these buzzboxes existed a month ago, and can't wait to get/fix one up now!
Watch your duty cycle. As you noticed a melting terminal. Building a trailer for a friend I melted a portion of the selector. He was in a hurry and didn't want to let the unit have cool down breaks.
The nylon gear is still available from Lincoln. Running the Roll pin directly against the metal detentes will cause premature wear and the switch will not hold its setting.
4:35 I had to do a very similar thing, on an old tombstone, as well. As far as 'plastic' goes : MAKE ONE FROM REAL METAL/steel. Wouldn't be hard, use a piece of pipe, the same OD as this needs. File/grind the sawteeth, and your basically done. NEVER to fix the 'detents' for each range again. Near the end of video: use a scavenged booster cable, larger size 00 and add it to the ground cable = super long, like 25 feet or so. Mine goes anywhere in the garage….(oldshopguy)
Great job ! I love beating the system like that. That little plastic detent part was specifically designed to fail and that welder was supposed to go to the dump and be replaced by a brand new one…and the new one would have another “weak link” so it would be sure to fail I a given period of time , and probably a much shorter period of time than the old one.
How is my first welder 16 years old my dad taught me how to weld I still have it till this day I am now 65 years old Bob Elkhart Indiana I know I have a Hobart Handler 190 I love it
I like your approach tackling the job . ! You were really simple just dealt with the problem didn’t have to go on forever why it didn’t work . Thanks man !
Gonna rip mine apart when I get home. Let a buddy borrow it, he brought it back and it no longer turns on
I do love that soft arc sound of a stick welder. Migs buzz sharply and tips almost squeal.

Help, how do you transport an even bigger welder back home?
You can crimp then put some solder in!

Does your pup have a WARM place to lay down ?
nice fix!! ex peazy

If your missing a screw? just follow your puppy around for a few days..and it will pass through !!
Nice here's to the good old days when people actually repaired their stuff.
I have a coat just like that but I think yours is in better shape. lol. Good fix on that old welder.
Easiest way to see if the leads are hot is touch them to your tongue.
No sound. You must have used the wrong monoral channel

I guess it didn't occur to you to clean-out the dusty cobwebs whilst you had the welder apart? Come-on MAN, you can do better than that…can't you?

Faaaaaaaantastic!
This is so beast
thank you I just needed to take it apart. and didn't want to do more work then needed to be.
Nice work. I just picked one up. Working good.
Arcing of contacts and wiper is prevented by turning off welder before switching amps.
