Nicholas Connolly-Rangos says:

great vid, i got a rebuilt r380 from ashcroft about a year ago for my disco
1 94′, but i haven’t changed my lt230 transfer box, how could i figure if i
have damaged the center diff without having to open it up? should i lift
the car on the chassis and check the wheels while on diff lock and off?

garthglen100 says:

nonsense about the centre diff!
Breakage of this part is not because of difference in prop speeds but the
sudden gain of traction once a wheel gets traction again.
I have spent years driving dunes and sand in the Namib and very rarely have
the ‘diff lock’ engaged.
more often than not do we have wheel spin conditions with no failures
whatsoever.
Biggest problems on R380 are lack of oil or degeneration of oil mostly
causing 5th gear layshaft and mainshaft bearings in ext housings to wear,
ultimately causing gearbox failure.
Tcases are very strong if oil levels are maintained, if oil levels drop
first parts to usually see problems are intermediate shaft bearings with a
possibility of intermediate shaft wearing into the soft aluminum casing.

I have a 2003 Land Rover Discovery and I wondering if a can switch my HI &
LOW transfer case for a HI & LOW with locks transfer case and what is the
difference between 2 transfer cases. thank you

R C Nelson says:

What British machine doesn’t leak oil?

Steven S says:

That cleared up some points thankyou.

Dane H says:

Well, everyone yelled at me for locking my center diff on minor obstacles,
I sure glad I did It now!

Robert Carson says:

Hi, im am having a problem with my LR3 2006 automatic V6 2.7, when I
eccelerate and am driving there is a sound coming from the car. Its hard to
discribe but sounds like a grinding noise. The sound is prominent from
inside but no as much from out side , could this be that I need to change
the transffer or gearbox oil.

No warning lights are appearing but this noise is concerning me.

Thanks

Rob

Video first.

Great video and explanation! Very simple and concise, but at the same time

Land Rover Toolbox Videos says:

200tdi and older Defenders, Range Rover Classics that use the LT77 has the
LT230 transfer box fitted too.

Land Rover Toolbox Videos says:

Will be an idea to get into the LT230 transfer box, repairs and driving
styles I think it is needed.
