In this video we look at our abandoned Land Rover Freelander 1 TD4 – it has a couple of issues from being stood – firstly the alternator decided to smoke ! and then it would not start – we investigate this and it turns out to be the in tank fuel pump – so we replace the fuel pump !
Oh dear, Simon. That retaining ring went back on much too easily – I think you've missed the rubber seal from the old pump. On my V6 Freelander, I had to stand (apply lots of downwards force) on the fuel pump in order to get the retaining ring back on. Once it caught, I used a special tool I found on Ebay to tighten it fully. Using a screwdriver damages the ring as you're applying too much force on those raised bits hitting them one at a time. I broke several using a screwdriver, until I found that tool (it was home made by a Land Rover service mechanic to make his job easier).
ICYMI, have a look at this Defender shock failure https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEkkB_v13fQ
Great video, but it finished too soon – it would have been great to see it after Lily washed it and cleaned the inside.
Thought about buying one of these as a project car, but living in Birmingham I don’t think they pass ULEZ
Nice to see the older vehicles getting some love!
Did you forget to replace rubber seal , shown in wider at 10.35 ? When you fitted new pump ??
Recently got myself an old Td4 Freelander 1, the design finally started to appeal to me. 3-door with a removable hard back is great for sunny days. Fuel pump on mine sounds a bit rough but I think it's the outboard one, thankfully it doesn't smoke at all.
Hello Simon, good to see it working. Don't let the poor girl breath the mould spores as it's not good for your health. I cleaned cars that were the same and I wore a mask with filters. Maybe my work mates told me to wear it as I'm to ugly come to think of it, who knows.
