Monster magnet meets computer…

Will a 6″ neodymium magnet destroy a computer? In this video I give you the answer. Link to video, where I take the HDD apart: http://youtu.be/ep_VCotA1ZY Fu…

Someone sounds very danish xD

brainiac75 says:

Wow, my new video had a flying start so I completely forgot to post about
it here. Thanks for all the views and good comments already!

The idea behind this video was to answer a common question: Will the really
big neodymium magnets destroy all electronics in my house if I buy one?

No, just keep a distance and all will be fine. Get the magnet too close
though and bad things start happening. Like in the video…

Mortjep9531 says:

why not use modern components?

MuffinDodge says:

nice computer you have there, *gets out magnet*

EasyPCUK says:

Im a little new to magnets, you said it was painful, why is that? Was it
physical pain or sarcasm about killing the computer? XD

Greg S. says:

Time to *GEEK OUT* (and *BREAK STUFF*) with a *MONSTER NEODYMIUM MAGNET!!*

Maximilien Blanchard says:

So a static screen can see magnetic fields, and were did you get the 6 inch
neodymium magnet?
P.S this video was awesome

LCdrDerrick says:

I’m wondering how many bigger magnets, delivered by the parcel service
without warning sign have fucked up some notebooks packed near to the
magnets. The smaller ones, like those 5mm balls might not effect anything,
cause their hundreds smaller magnetic fields are trapped in kind of a
circle following the pattern they are sticked together, but holy shit that
big thing might ruin some boot sectors and more. If that thing sticks to a
iron surface you might not release it again without a crowbar. What does it
cost? Must be quite expensive. Take that thing to NSAs open house
presentation and let them show you the server rooms, but avoid people with
pacemakers.

Mako-kun says:

It just wiped the hdd out, reload the os and you should be fine. If it were
an ssd then that might not happen.

iDerekMC says:

why dooes he use gloves for the big magnet? can it harm u if u dont use
gloves? xD

dan110024 says:

I hate it when I forget and place my neodymium magnet on top of my
computer. Gets me every time.

Jonas Lindenblatt says:

why would you pay 460€ for a 1200kg / 2400lbs magnet ? and what would you
want to do with it ?

ElectricAir42 says:

Where the hell did you get a 6 inch neodymium magnet?

Damien Hartley says:

the magnet would actually improve the signal strength on a cell phone and
possible speed up the internet.

TheEPROM9 says:

Plus with those old Compaq computers all the BIOS data is on the HDD and is
inaccable without a boot disk to format a BIOS config on the HDD. I have
tried recovering data from a HDD that has been erased with a powerful
magnet. All tests I have tried such a low level formats and even getting
something to reconise the disk have failed. It is an excellent method for
destroying sensitive data on magnetic mediums.

eliyahu rahimi says:

Where can I get one

Cake Gaming says:

Why is it dangerous to bring the magnet really close to the computer and
why did it mess up the computer?

Gatewayuser200 says:

yay for killing perfectly working electronics for the sake of a stupid
youtube video!

Johny Kehagio says:

At school they’ve been trying to explain what a magnetic field is for
weeks. Why didn’t they just show THIS to us?

Hoss EV says:

wow thats an old computer

21boxhead says:

Computer is fine its
just the magnet froze the hard drive
Hard drives spin you stopped it from spinning causing damage to it

Garrett Miller says:

This is why you get a solid state drive.

shocktop says:

You are slowly destroying the harddrive (which is a magnet).

Finn Palm says:

Fucking magnets.. how do they work?

BattousaiHBr says:

moral of the story:
keep magnets away from HDDs and magnet tapes (if you still have them for
some reason…)

John Sims says:

Ghost the drive with a formatted blank of same (size, brand etc.)….
should restore it to a point where you can install the os again. If that
doesn’t work open up the drive and use a finger to try and spin it…it
might just be stuck…or it could be burned and not turn at all.
The good thing about those old PC’s is parts (including HDD) are realllly
cheap now:-) so don’t worry even if the hard drive is fried the computer
isn’t dead yet…just needs a minor surgery..

macieksoft says:

If we talking about computers magnet will erase the magnetic memory
(including non SSD hard disk). I am not sure about flop IIRC flop is
combination of optical and magnetic drive so i guess it could stay
unaffected as long as you do not writing anything to it. Things that are
saved in RAM will reather stay there, same thing with optical drives. Its
the reason why military grade PCs are using SSD drives, they are more
survivable, vibration proof, faster and non affected by magnetic field.
This however do NOT mean EMP resistant because EMP is working a bit
different way.

Nexfero says:

lol you can see the lamp shade moving because of the magnetic field at 5:08

bost h says:

I would imagine with such a large magnet that it would eventually get
covered in tiny pieces of magnetic material that just happened to be nearby
it. Eventually causing it to get really dirty. Does this happen?

Rob Lamper says:

where can you buy one of them magnets?

Nils Jonsson says:

5:20 “no more merchy” ;D

Liam Andrews says:

this works like a emp

Constantine Joseph says:

Really look like a creepy TV rapist

MystiFay says:

Why the hell can you adjust your screen like that? At 8:31? What is that
good for… never heard of that feature existing in old computers.

leibakki says:

Fuck! Aliens or the goverment are going to EMP my 5000$ tri 980 sli
computer and fry its 1000$ CPU! I want all strong magnets like this
destroyed! Thrown to the mount doom. What if my neighbor had a magnet like
this?

TheGreatestGinja says:

so uhh from my knowledge imma throw a GUESS. the magnets started flick on
and off different parts of the magnetic hard drive, most of the computer
was still working but its memories were disappearing… kinda sad

Rafael Santana says:

The computer still works…….magnetism only affects the hard drives
inside the computer, since the information is magnetically stored. If you
re-formated the drive, it would probably work fine again but it’s obvious
any previous data has been lost for good.
