Before adding the coolant, first add water instead, thay way you'll know if they are any leaks in any of the hoses or thermostat, then start the car and leave it on for about 5 min and if you don't see any leaks then just drain all the water out of the radiator and add your favorite coolant.

I’m trying to do this at home do I need to drain out the coolant??
