Kia Sportage 2001 Replacing the Water Pump

It’s a good Idea to replace the water pump at the same time as you replace the timing belt, because the Water pump is run by the timing belt. The water pump …

The black plastic timing cover of course 🙂

Uncle Rice says:

I acquired this info from a series of websites where many people mentioned
running into the problem. I figured I would pass it along to save people
problems

My video of replacing the Kia water pump would have been banned. It’s a
nightmare of a job and I CUSS! Good GOD. Why did they put the water pump
INSIDE the engine?!?!

davidangelmorin says:

how many hours did it take to do it

Uncle Rice says:

The water pump is buried under, and driven by, the timing belt. In the
description above, there is a link to part 1. It will show you how to get
to the water pump. There is no way to ‘just’ replace the water pump. you
have to pull the timing belt to get to the pump. Thus these two videos both
detail what is needed to get the water pump off. I believe #3, also linked
above, tells you how to put it all back together.

Uncle Rice says:

I can Identify with that. The thing is, this car is actually one of the
easier ones they sell these days. Makes me want to build my own.

Timothy Hede says:

I love the way you present a solution for bad problems. Have replaced water
pumps in several cars over the years. I noticed you didn’t have to pull the
timing belt. Had a 89 mazda had to change timeing belt too

sticking the gasket to the water pump housing first- is a good idea… but
I thought this video would show me how to locate and remove the water pump
of a 2001 Kia Sportage. Do you have any videos that show “strictly” 2001
Kia Sportage Water Pump- “locate and removal”

Would like to put a plow on mine

The Greatest Of All Time says:

You are freaking awesome at fixing that kia, plus you make it look super
easy. Mechanic said my timing belt was hitting against the cover at low
revs, but not at high revs any idea, mines a 5 speed, thanks feel free to
email me

BGills6 says:

As I recall, you said there was a difference between in water pumps. One
pump had six-blades, the other 8-blades, and they both fit. You also said
don’t use the 8-blade, as it will tear-up the timing belt. What were the
circumstances that allowed you to discover this. Was it the old timing belt
it chewed up? If so, did you mark the direction before removal? The reason
I’m asking is I bought a kit for the 2001 Kia Sporatge, the belt is mated
for the 8-blade pump that comes with kit.

BGills6 says:

I used the eight blade replacement pump. 1,600 miles on it without issue.
The flow also seems a bit stronger, but it’s difficult to tell for sure.
Thanks for the video, it really helped me do the job faster as there were
few surprises. I did run into an issue with a deformed woodruff key, and
keyway, where the crank shaft mates to the harmonic-balancer, but that’s a
whole different story… Thanks again!
