Come along as I have a look at a 2015 Kia Sorento that has been at the dealers countless times and another local shop to see why the heck this thing won’t start! It cranks over just fine but won’t start…. sometimes. The other shop towed it to me to see if we could make heads or tails of it. Let’s have a look.

Good ole lead free solder strikes again
Just goes to show ya, should have brought it to the best to begin with.
Says loads about the Kia dealer
Great diagnosis. Very well done. I spent 40 years working at a Chrysler/FCA dealer here in Canada and spent the last 17 years doing exactly this type of work on Chrysler and other off brand makes. The key is to do your research and set out a diagnostic path. Actually enjoyed this type of work a lot.
you need a new cover due to salt water contam!!??No?? from tech
I know which muffin I'ld be eatin'………lol
Did you find a a part number for the fuse box cover? Long term she's gonna need one without a big durned hole in it.
Well? Did you go for the chocolate or berry muffin!?
I am not a trade mechanic and the only cars I work on have been out of production for 40 years but those prodemand wiring diagrams look awesome from the point of how easy they are to navigate. Eric you are in your element on like this, you sound so excited when you get to dig into a complicated problem. Your diagnostic skills are a model to follow.
As soon as you said she took it to a dealer I new they had taken this lady for a ride and you would figure it out. Electrical gremlins are the worst! Put my fist through the like button . Hey Eric . Watch out for lightning.
Excellent. Your approach to problem solving is the best!
Always good info Mr. O.
I'd probably go with your resoldered part, if Kia can make one faulty one I'm sure they can make a lot more.
Integrated relays piss me off. Just had to deal with one in my 03 f250 for the fuel pump. Random stalling. Have to change the whole fuse box for 1 relay. It's just stupid engineering
I hope you ordered her a new lid.
Should probably get a new cover for that fuse box as well.
If Eric can do it you can do it? I am uncertain if he believes this or not. His approach is, "don't touch it and fix it if you don't know what you fixed". I wish that were true for me too, but not always. I drove home one time with a piece of wood stuck in the distributer points from an airshow at Fairchild. Got out of the airshow and the car wouldn't start. Two little kids a hundred miles from home in a Ford Torino. I hacked together a fix that lasted that hundred miles. Didn't run too good but made it home.
Great diagnosis!
