What GEARS Did I Install in My Jeep Wrangler? 4.88 or 5.13's?

When you install larger tires on your Jeep you will inevitably loose performance and the best way to get it back is to change out your gears with a new ring and pinion. In this video I share with you what I learned about selecting new gears, some basic gear ratio information and what new gears I chose for my Jeep. #jeepwrangler #jeep #gears

I just got my 4.88 gears installed this week. I am very happy with the upgrade. The break-in is going okay.

jesus suarez says:

Is Revolution Gears better than Yukon Gears?

antonio mojica says:

I have a 07 Jeep wrangler and I don’t know what kind of gears I have front says ( Dana 42960 ) (054-7) and front I have (Dana 4631-2 ) (75-8) every time I try to put in on 4×4 it gets stuck and makes a grinding noise

Jesse Attanasio says:

I went from. A 1997 un modified civic to a wrangler on 35s. I’ve realized that gas mileage has left the chat.

Jo says:

I bought my 2nd Jeep already built with some 37s manual tranny. It struggles a lot on up hills usually have it in 4th gear to pick up once I’m all caught up to speed and make the switch to 5th, it’ll slowly start slowing down again sooo I’m suspecting that perhaps it’s at stock 4:10s? This was a great video brad thank you! Will look into getting 4:88

Crumb_Trails says:

I went with 5.13 and 37s on my '13 JKU Sport. I would have gone lower but my limiting factor was the Dana 30 up front. Though it was perfect for me and did some cross country coast to coast trips, it wasn't ideal on the road. It wasn't my daily but the sacrifice on the road was well worth the preformed on the street/ highway.

4STnapvr says:

Extremely helpful. I knew nothing about gear ratios until watching your excellent explanation. Thank you. Might I ask on a related topic how you rotate the tires on your Jeep. Do you simply go front to rear and rear to front? Or, do you X the rear to front and go straight back with the front to rear? Thanks.

Mark L says:

Great video! I have a 2020 JT Sport with 3.73 gears. I’d like to have more towing power for a small RV(3500 lbs) or so. What ratio would you recommend? 4.10’s ?

Shakti Chauhan says:

Thank you, Bard. I am in a similar boat as you were where I was debating between 4.88 and 5.13, but after watching your video I think I will be going with 4.88 as well. I have an 06 modified Wrangler Rubicon (originally Sport but had swapped Dana 30/35 with Dana 44s from another 06 Rubicon) with 35-inch Tires but I plan to upgrade to 37s in the near future.

Daisuke says:

Do you also need to swap your axle or drive shaft after re-gearing?? I'm trying to get 37s but not sure where to start…

Lifted Trucks USA says:

On 5:13's because it was on 37's and was going to upgrade to 40's eventually.

Douglas Rodrigues says:

The first time a DIY mechanic does a ring and pinion gear change, something won't be correct. Ask me how I know.

Luis says:

Thank you for the great content. How regearing would affect a supercharged jt Rubicon?

Blain says:

Great breakdown, thx brother ✊✌️

Panagiotis Stavrou says:

It was very valuable an v informative.I have ordered mine with 4.88 and it is great! thanks a lot!

Ronald Cobbley says:

I to get a jeep first

Simon Charest says:

hello, congratulations on your good work, thanks to you the consumer is carefully informed. now i have an ambiguity for the ratio of my gladiator rubicon, i live in quebec in canada, my job is snow removal with tractors, for moons, everyone knows that a jeep is superior to a truck. I want to install a front plow to push snow. in the summer I have a boat that weighs 3000lbs, I am often on the road for travel, my top speed here in Canada is a maximum of 120 kilometers per hour. what would be the best ratio for my utility, the ideal for me is the maximum of force and power while respecting the speed of the engine at approximately 1700 revolutions in 8iem clutch. thank you !

Leon Stone says:

I watched the video twice trying to see if he mentions if he has a manual or automatic. He doesn't! Trying to figure out the best gears to put in my 2008 Wrangler x, automatic with 35s.

Lars Groh says:

Great video! We're running still the stock 4.1 on our almost 3t camper-wrangler. Since fuel consumption is a topic for us (due to extremely low range with the standard fuel tank): Does your jeep now consumes more or less fuel compared to the stock gear ratio?

David Paradis says:

Saw a video and the guy specialized in rear end installation and he said the higher gear ratio is actually a physically weaker gear for rock crawling because it has fewer teeth, especially on the Dana 44 rear ends

Mauro Moreno says:

Hi, I'm just following your advice and I when to Rebel off-road to do this mod, to be honest, it was an experience but my concern is how I know if this change was made because I request the stock parts the rebel representative told me that the got rid of those… So my question is how do you know if they did the job and they put the right gear dimension on my jeep. so to your knowledge can you help me with this… As you can tell I'm new to this I love jeep is my first one and I'm investing money to enjoy it please give and advice.

Larry Brockhaus says:

When I first started wheeling TrailRecon was the first channel I saw and I have followed it ever since. It is so well done. And this was a very informative video to help me understand gearing. In fact all of your videos have been very informative, no matter the subject.
I know this is an older thread, but I have plans to build my Jeep as I will be doing the Rubicon trail with Jeepers Jamboree at the end of July. I have decided on the shop, but I’m having some reservations about the gearing. I have a 2013 JKU that is stock except for 33” tires and 2" spacer. I plan to re-gear, air lockers, new driveshaft, new skid plates, 37” tires, 3.5” or 4.5” MetalCloak lift, 1 ton steering kit, trussed Dana 44 axle on the front with RCV joints. I was recommended 5.13 gears but I’m wondering if maybe I would be better suited for 4.88 in the long run. I have been wheeling for about 5 years. As I said doing the Rubicon Trail and and have about 60 some trails here in Arizona. I used to live in SD now AZ and want to do trails in CA. I want to do some overlanding as well. I am in the season of retirement at 73, so I don't have the daily commute. I know that’s a lot of information and my Jeep is supposed to go in next week. Thanks Brad.
