our 4.0 on the 98 grand cherokee.. was black when it had 80k miles.. flushed.. and guess what 410k miles now and it still going with regular maintenance. This doesnt mean its dead… flush it.. fill and test.. Also that pan and filter on it.. this doesnt look like a trans behiond a 4.0.. the 42re was used behind a 4.0.. thats deff no pan on a 42re
