Good video, thanks. MAPP gas was a nice tip. My 94 Jeep Cherokee has
developed the “Death Wobble”. The track arm n steering dampener r both
ordered from Amazon. Used to know how to tighten the steering box,
hopefully can relearn how to do that. Your video was very clear, thanks
again.
Any loose component in the steering system could initiate death wobble.
I’ve never experienced it, so I don’t know for sure. I need to replace some
additional components in the steering, It’s still a little sloppy. I’m
thinking of just preemptively replacing everything — bushings, ball
joints, all the steering linkages. The ZJ has 146k on it, and I’d like my
wife to be able to drive it, but it’s too squirrelly for me to feel good
about it yet.
Funny thing is, that it’s a CALIPER, not a micrometer. I don’t know why I
kept calling it that, A micrometer is 10x more accurate, and is basically
shaped like a c-clamp. I hate using a tape measure since they aren’t
accurate enough. The MAPP gas is a common tool, often referred to as “the
flame wrench.”
I have 96 ZJ 5.2 and replaced ALL front end parts including the steering
box minus the ball joints, I have poly bushings throughout with iron man
fixed control arms, etc. I hope you shot some grease in there?
Lol. I’m actually from the midwest. I’m in the Cincinnati area. I have
never considered myself a “southerner,” but if you’re from MS, I bet I
sound really strange to you — As you would to me. Also, I live in a town
that has a lot of transplants from Kentucky, so my accent has been a bit
“southernized” over the years.
tpawlowskis is right. I live in Cambridge, right by MIT, and the jeep
fanatics are few and far between. 🙁 Noticed the seals went bad on my XJ so
I’ve got a new project this spring. Not touching it after this snow storm :s
Hey Chad, you said you were from the Cincinnati area? I myself live there
and i was wondering if you did customer vehicles? I have a ’94 ZJ V8, and
need everything upfront replaced, tie-rod, balljoints and so on.

My 97 Orvis has under 85k miles on it and i got the death wobble and had to
change the track bar.
MAPP gas is similar to propane, but burns a bit hotter, and costs a little
more. At any hardware store.
Haha dude i can tell your from the south i would love to chill with you you
seem so cool i hate the punks from my area in massachusetts
LOL our 98 Jeep Cherokee has 205K and is all original. So Im sure things are
worn out just alittle bit lol….
You’ve got to try Kroil. You won’t go back to anything else. I use it on a
regular basis as an A&P mechanic. It’s magical.
Thank you for making this video. Helped with my replacement today.
Great info ratman, I learned a lot and more to the point saved me a few
sterling 😉 cheers
Yeah.. I know that. For some stupid reason, I kept calling it a micrometer.
I wasn’t about to re-shoot the entire video for that…lol.

He broke out the micrometer in a backyard fix, that’s awesome. Thanks for
the MAP gas trick.

I got a 95 zj and I have the worst death wobble ever lol due to tie rod ends
so if you don’t have heat to remove the tie rod you screw ? are there any
other way to remove it with out using heat?
Been watching a few vids on tie rod ends and your’s is the best I’ve seen!
I don’t need to watch any others. You were very thorough! Thanks a mill!
Dude you alright after that tornado!?
That it’s a DIGITAL CALIPER, not a micrometer A micrometer is totally
different tool
Very informative, thanks man!
