Did you add oil like it said to do with a new compressor ?

The fact it stops when you turn off the compressor said it’s the compressor.

You can swap it out with a warranty unit or just let it run for a few weeks and see if the sound changes.

My bet is the compressor is bad.

But I also don’t know what it sounded like before.
