This is a great video. My ’98 Cherokee is also defaulting to the defrost and floor. It appears to be a deteriorated boot enabling a week connection to the intake manifold. Sometimes my vents switch fine and others it gets stuck on defrost. What is that part called so I can find a replacement online?

Bullshitkorner says:

its always nice when you have a easy fix

Ssgtusmc0629 says:

This video helped me figure out my issue! Thanks! But I did want to mention that I didnt have an engine code and the issue was the boot came off the manifold and the line was just hanging there. I just connected it back and viola, my ac and cruise control was fixed!

jpreciado223 says:

Damn right! Specially with this heat man!

Bullshitkorner says:

it’s always beer time hahahahaha

jpreciado223 says:

Yeah, this guy wanted me to leave my jeep at his house and then give me the bill. I was like hell no. It got hot here in El Paso so i need it fixed now. It’s beer time now bud!

Bullshitkorner says:

good stuff glad you were able to track down the issue and get it fixed

jpreciado223 says:

Hey bud how are ya? Just wanted to let you know that i checked all the spots you told me about and every one of them was good. What i found was a broken plastic piece that goes attached from the actuator to the vent! So I put them together with one small screw, tighter than piss! Problem solved! Thanx for your help bud.

the smoke machine was purchased off ebay for like 30 dollars or something, it worked perfect to find my issue with the vacuum leak with the BMW. keep me posted on your progress, anytime issue when it doesn’t give a code makes things hard to pinpoint and track down

Ryan Atnip says:

at this point it looks like that is my only option left. I am thinking about using your idea with the smoke machine and seeing if I have any leaks in my system. I remember last summer getting an EVAP large leak code a few times when it would sputter when I first started it, but it hasnt done that in almost a year. either way, I was never successful in tracking that leak

Bullshitkorner says:

yes that’s a good one indeed as you have done your research into troubleshooting the issue. the only suggestion at this point is to find someone with a real good scanner that has graphs and record the data when you first start it and see what your fuel curves and all that are at.

Ryan Atnip says:

well instead of renting a fuel pressure gauge from autozone I thought id try a different method and bought a mechanics stethoscope. placed it on each fuel injector and each one had the same click timing as the others, none appear to be sticking. I’ve already done the fuel pump assembly (with regulator) IAC, TPS, Coil, spark plugs, cleaned throttle…Im out of ideas :/

Bullshitkorner says:

keep me posted on what you find out while troubleshooting

Ryan Atnip says:

I know this is good as well, about a month ago I completely removed the throttle and cleaned all the gunk out and installed a fresh gasket. I think you may be right about an injector

Bullshitkorner says:

ok check something really simple, remove your intake hose to the throttle body and make sure the butterfly plate is clean. if there is build of dirt and shit it can cause this issue as well.

Ryan Atnip says:

alrighty I will try doing a leak down test then. A few months ago I did a fuel pressure test on the check valve and the pressure was real low, changed the whole pump and it ended up resolving a misfire problem. The issue I have now with the sputter doesnt seem to have any other affect other then just when I start it up, but who knows, when I resolve it I may see a gas mileage increase. I’ll let you know what happens

Bullshitkorner says:

a faulty o2 sensor would in theory give you a code, however don’t rule it out. if you have a fuel pressure gauge i’d do a leak down test on the injectors in case you have 1 or more sticking. a sticking injector would pump too much fuel into your system. the 4.0 jeep has 2 upstream o2 sensors and 2 downstream sensors. the upper 2 mix the fuel the lower 2 would pick up on the jeep running rich that is why i’m thinking that is not the case

Ryan Atnip says:

haha I have the same radio as you, its pretty nice. btw I’ve been having a problem with my TJ for awhile as well, started almost a year ago. When I go to start it up after it has run for about 5-8 seconds it will sputter very roughly and then fix itself, I can also smell fuel when it does this. No engine codes has ever come up for it so Im not sure what could be the source. Could a o2 sensor cause this?

Bullshitkorner says:

that’s very true indeed the only issue you had was cable seizing up after decades of use

Bullshitkorner says:

hopefully that should do the trick

SpeedysStuff says:

Cars Carssuck the fan speed switch is easy to replace just do a Google search and you will find the how to. I did mine last year also you may have to replace the resistor too which is an easy fix also.

cybercat84065 says:

I wish my tj had the old style cable pull vents that my 91 YJ had, never had a problem wit em.

wwwCARSSUCKcom says:

Hey, when you had the controls out, did it look like you could replace just the fan speed switch? Mine only works on 1, 3 and 4. 2 is where I always want it and maybe that is why it wore out.

wwwCARSSUCKcom says:

Hard to say. I very rarely run the AC. I do run the defroster though and haven’t noticed a performance issue. Mine is not all that quick anyway as it has 35″ tires with the original 3.73 gears.

Wallace Rose says:

Very good video. That guy should be able to fix his jeep!

Bullshitkorner says:

I did come across your video, i found it odd that your vacuum boot would have split at the vacuum reservoir. that would have made troubleshooting fairly hard for the average person. How do you find the jeep with AC is it gutless with the AC on while driving down the highway ?

wwwCARSSUCKcom says:

Nice video. I had the same problem. Mine was a split boot going into the vacuum reservoir under the battery. I filmed and posted it as youtube CbEMURzbHNc.
