Chad Greene says:

It is best to disconnect the battery terminal. There could be a spike that damages the module when you install it if it’s not and all your work and money will lost. Battery terminals can be really frustrating. Mine took a long time the first time I did this.

shireshirefolkshire says:

I have a question: trying to fix the gf’s ESM issue but the jerkoff mechanic who last worked on it attached the neg battery terminal in such a fashion that I can’t get the damn bolt off. It’s the tranny that we don’t have the 4 lo selector. Is it really necessary to disconnect the battery if I’m just yanking out the ESM harness?

Chad Greene says:

Wow,.1700? There must have been more than the ESM that they wanted to replace?

Codyhall1961 says:

Followed the instructions and so far it seems to of done the trick. If this works out your video just saved me $1700.00 Thank you

LUCY Horvath says:

Well explained. Thanks.

Chad Greene says:

Glad it helped.

Roy Anderson says:

Chad Many thanks, board was filthy coffee, soda, ect purchased 2005 last May 2013 72,000 miles this was the problem. You saved me 700.00 dollars. Car is
running great..

Chad Greene says:

Awesome…You’re welcome. Glad it worked for you!

Jacques Riungel says:

Thanks for posting. I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo V6 3.7L with the same problem. Check engine would light up, even the [P][R][N][D]. I cleaned as per your tutorial video and it worked like a charm! This video saved me $475+labor fees. Thanks, man!

Chad Greene says:

If you have not done so already get the code/s read from a scan tool to make sure it is indeed the ESM before you replace the unit. My jeep would illuminate the check engine light as it “jumped” out of gear and lit up all the [P][R][N][D]but it didn’t ever go into limp mode that I can recall. The circuit board is outsource in the ESM anyway so if the ESM part number matches you’ll likely same some money with an aftermarket one if it exists.

Aaron Hamann says:

Thank you for the tutorial Chad it was helpful, as my 2007 Jeep has been having similar difficulties. I cleaned the ESM as described, but unfortunately, after initially working, it continues to return to Limp Mode. I am considering purchasing a new ESM. Do you suggest Mopar or an equivalent? Thanks for your help.

emmartnora says:

Our check engine light never came on. I usually pulled over quickly and shut the car off. But both times I couldn’t accelerate over 30MPH. Seem’s to be working fine now. Thanks again. All in all it was a $4 fix!

Chad Greene says:

Nice. Hope it works out for you. Did you’re MIL (check engine) light come on after that happened to you? If so what code number did you get?

emmartnora says:

We have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee AWD. I’ve had the [P][R][N][D] thing happen to me twice. Both times my 2 yr old was with me. Very scary. Planning a road trip next week and found your video! We already have it popped off and jsut went to the store for some electrical cleaner. Amazing how easy that was, now I can also clean all the nasty dog hair/gunk from everywhere {from the previous owners} THANKS for the post!

Chad Greene says:

Glad to help. It’s great that so many people have tried this and had success.

Ryan Fleming says:

The rubber piece where your knob travels got all gummed up and I could move my 05 out of neutral or reverse. This video saved me hundreds if not thousands. You sir saved my day

Lubin Hoque says:

Awesome video – I did all of that and there was no change…for about 3 hours and then it was all back to normal – will see how long for. Thanks again! Jeep Commander driver in the UK where parts are x2 the US at least!

C Teo says:

Hi, thanks for the video. I’ve done this in 2011 as per jeepforum instructions which are the same you put in here. No problem since but as you said maybe doing it as a preventative measure is worth it.

ConfusedCreative says:

Thank you kind sir… Your video continues to be a success story help alot of ppl save a $1000 or more in this jeep repair.. Did it last night with very lottle tools… Seems to be working fine… Check engine light is gone!!!!! Thanks more than you could imagine…

bilal hazaimeh says:

thank u , actually i dont use it that much , i juse used it wen i wanna decrease my speed . i just wondering if i can check the fuse of the tiptronic , if yes ,, where can i find it ? thank u again

Chad Greene says:

“Electrical contact cleaner”. Sold in nearly all hardware or automotive stores. Mine was just a store brand from Canadian tire in Canada. It evaporates really fast and leaves no residue. It is a really common product.

maribel valencia says:

what type of cleaner did you use!!!!

Chad Greene says:

Were you using the manual shift feature a lot? If so it may have wear on the manual shift part of the same circuit board. The cleaning procedure is the same. Or, it could be a Transmission control module (TCM) problem. May need diagnostics on this one.

bilal hazaimeh says:

Hi,

I drive a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.7 V6 with the Mercedes-Benz 5G-Tronic transmission.

I tried to shift manually, but nothing will happen. The automatic works great, it’s just that I can’t manually select the gear anymore. It worked fine until recently, but now it’s not possible anymore.

Does anybody have a guess what could be wrong? Maybe a broken fuse or something? I doubt that it is something mechanically..

Chad Greene says:

No, this sounds like something is binding in the shift assembly. I’m sorry but I don’t know the solution to that problem.

Chad Greene says:

Yes it can certainly be an occasional problem. Mine would often happen on the highway when cruise control was on. It would randomly act like it was in neutral and my gear indicator would look like this: [P][R][N][D]. Shutting down and restarting often “reboots” things for a short time and then the problem returns. As for the 3.7 I’m not sure. You’d have to open it up to see what lies within, but I’m guessing it is similar if not sthe ame same setup in there.

Tnickert1214 says:

I was wondering if its the same Process for a 3.7 grand. And also could it be an Intermittent problem? My jeep does this Occasionally and for the most par works fine

Chad Greene says:

Great to hear all the good results! Always awesome when stuff like this actually works and saves some money. .

oriox3000 says:

Hey Chad, thanks for making the video regarding the shift module cleanup detail. My wife’s jeep started to have this same problem with me thinking that I had to buy a new part. It worked like a charm. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

Mark Weber says:

Thank you so much for posting this video. My neighbor had this problem on her Jeep and we did not know how to fix it. The dealer wanted to charge her in the neighborhood of $600 to $800, but thanks to your video, I was able to fix it for free.

TheMajorJoe says:

Hi Guys, having the same problem. do you have the part number for the ESM for a 4wd car?

beachxlove says:

thank you!

kf2u says:

Thanks for the video. My 2005 has 97k miles and it just started to do this. I spent more time looking for the appropriate bits than the actual removal, cleaning, and reinstall. The test drive seemed fine. The Check Engine light went out after the next key cycle. Keeping my fingers crossed. I will give it some time before a victory lap. I’ll update then. Thanks again!

Chad Greene says:

You’re welcome. I’m glad it’s helped a few folks out.

Nat F says:

Thanks for putting this together, really appreciated.
