Hey Jar3817 ,only Harbor Freight has those tools? I mean aside of ebay ? I have a Gran Cherokee 96 and looks like I have to do the same congrats good video !
Would be really easy on the tool to have some lube as well.
Thank you! This video saved me about $600 and I did both sides myself over the weekend. You rock!
Helpfull
How much did the balljoints cost?
Thank you so much for this video. We have a 97 Jeep Cherokee and I wasn’t sure if your work on your 86 would apply, but it was exactly the same. Plus, I ended up renting the same ball joint remover set that you use in the video. Your video eliminated any need for any guess work. I followed what you did exactly, although I got away without have to use the washer shims. Maybe, they changed that between 86 and 97, but I everything else and it worked like a charm. Thanks so much
FWIW, I was always taught not to completely remove the castle nut on the balljoint, but leave it loosely threaded while you pop the joint. It will act as a safety stop when the joint pops and prevent parts flying apart like at 2:28.
He should really be using a spring compressor, that can be dangerous.
poppin ball joints like a boss!
Thanks for the refresher .you rock my friend.

did you get that tool to remove the ball joints at harbor freight? does the same tool install them???
Nice video man! Great quality.
Thanks for saving me $170.00 in labor just for the right side after buying my own tools from HarborFreight. Great videos.
Man this is the same JEEP I have, a 1986 cherokee. YOU are awesome for making this video. I’ll save a lot of dough by doing it myself, and I get to buy more tools!
you should take it to a alignment shop and tell them about the issue and they can install a offset ball joint to fix the positive camber in the jeeps

How did you get the ball joint separator in between the ball joint and the knuckle? I tried to do this and I couldn’t get it between. I ended up hammering it in which changed the shape of the bolt’s hole and could no longer get the bolt through. The ball detent of the pin also fell out during hammering. Went back the NEXT day to exchange it and the 15 they had in stock were gone overnight.
On mine, those three 13mm bolts on the hub(not shown in this video) are a huge pain. I have one of three loose so far.
Great video guys. Live that shim idea on the top.
Harbor Freight has to styles of the tool…Did you use the 4×4 kit or the standard ( 6 piece or 9 piece kit)? just wandering if I need to spend the extra dough on the 9 piece kit.
I’m in the process of doing this now , your video has helped me alot, worst part is that cup piece never made it to my kit… I bought the kit a long time ago just cuz it was on sale but now im kind of sol… I ended up using a piece of 1/4″ flat plate instead, it’s been working good so far, it shoul be ok on the ball joint too, good eye on the uneven upper ball joint
Haha that *POP* sound is like the best thing ever.
That ball joint seperator is amazing. Had to get it from HF after banging on the knuckle for 2 hours n it took 60 sec with seperator
did you have the death wobble ?
Thanks…. like you, I chiseled the hub assembly but I had taken the axle nut off, and the wheel hub did come off but boy, it was tough. I don’t think the wheel bearing would be damaged unless I hammered on the hub itself… Thanks!
Nah, I knew it was going to come out like that. I left the axle nut on purposely so it would all come out as one piece. It all had to move anyway so this way I didn’t have to wreck my wheel bearing trying to get the hub off the axle.
Hope it helped you, good luck!
By the way, did you think that the hub assembly was going to come out separately, when the whole axle came out????? That’s what i’ve been trying to do!
Thanks for making the video… I’m right in the thick of it working on my 1988 Cherokee!!!
Hi, thanks for the great vid. Did u drain your front diff flulid when you took the axle shaft off. I just changed it and dont really wanna do it again if possible. It looks like ur dron diff cover is still on so im guess no, PLease reply thanks.
Here’s a little FYI to make life easier, put the new balljoints in the freezer over night & heat the knuckle. They will press in like butter, the cold contracts the balljoints & the heat will expand the holes.
did the jeep have a lift at all
