It is related. You have to have tight joints (rod ends and ball joints) then proper alignment. The slop in your tie rod end is allowing a wheel to toe out or in which steers the car. You compensate by turning the wheel. I did tie rods and alignment on my old Ford F150. Wish I had filmed that. It is not that hard. Keep Googling. Somebody had to do a good video of it.

thanks, also a great vid for the wobble. Definitely have some worn out bushings where the tire rod connects to wheel mount… also should mention my jeep pulls to the right on a straight road and have turn my steering wheel to the left to compensate. would this be a steering shaft problem, or alignment or part of the tire rod issue?

Wobble and camber? I’d check the tie rods and drag link. Watch my steering wobble vid. Mine was just stabilizer bushings, but you will see the technique for finding it. lay on the ground and have someone work the steering back and forth and look for movement in the rod ends.

My jeep has been making a grinding noise from the rear end but it only makes the noise when i am slowly turning, ( in first or 2nd gear) and only after the vehicle has been driven for more than just a few minutes. I have taken apart the rear diff and everything seems to be in order, could my problem be the pinion and seal?

Not necessarily. It could be a cut seal. Try replacing it once. If the leak comes back, then you will have to inspect further.

Nope. Drill three holes in a piece of angle iron. bolt the iron to the pinion through the outside holes. use a bolt and nut in the middle hole to jack the pinion out of the case. Or just hit it with a hammer and see what happens. 🙂

Yes. The part # for the seals might be different, but the process is the same. Do your front one first so you get good at it, then film changing the rear and share.

Should be cake the 2nd time. Inspect the pinion shaft for nicks. Maybe it took a hit from a rock or something and is cutting the seal.

I got under the Jeep and noticed that the seal is only leaking between the yoke and the seal, best guess is that it is either damaged or has a larger ID than the yokes OD. Good thing is that the seals are <10 bucks.

I did lube, wiped a little diff oil on it, put rtv on the od. I wonder if the nut iOS loose or it is leaking between the pinion and the yoke ? I’ll get under and take. Better look. Thanks for the good post.

Ouch. Did you lube the inside of the seal before putting it on? You can tear them. If you figure it out, let us know.

Fantastic video, I followed and did mine, it is now leaking I fear that I tightened the nut 1 turn too little :(. not sure why it would leak after being replaced.

Yes, same process except you might not replace the seal or change the fluid. Actually, once you get the yoke out, I’d be tempted to put it in a vice and try to drill out that broken bolt from the back side.

Mine didn’t. I am guessing that whatever is making the noise (my guess is bearing) is what causes your pinion shaft to run out of true and leak. Inspection time. Film and share, please.

Yeah, mine was on the ground in park. I can’t think of any reason to remove the wheels or axles. I like the parking brake idea just in case.
