Jaguar XJ8 Rear tie rod replacement

Jaguar XJ8 Rear tie rod replacement

The rear end of the car was a little loose and the alignment was off, and we found these tie rods to be really worn so I had to replace them before any further work.

Thanks for posting, I’ll just mention you need to adjust the new one to the same length as the one removed.

Helpful video, thank you! On the passenger side I was able to use lots of socket extensions to break it loose, then was eventually able to get a pair of Vise-Grips attached to hold it in place. I used a regular ratchet/socket to get that one off. The driver's side? Hateful. I ended up using an air chisel to destroy the nut/ball stud to get it out.

OKAY – so 4 months later, I am ready! Took a lot of working up to! Actually it was so hot here all summer, I put it off. 2 issues: The large 18mm inner nuts that attach to the subframe – I have half the clearance you did in between the frame and the aluminum heat shield around the spare tire well. I will likely get 2 clicks of travel on the gearwrench on the right side one. Left is better. 2. They are REALLY rusted on. I put pennetrent on 2x over the summer and again now, and I can NOT move them. I am going to get an 18mm 6 point, non-rounding socket and a big half inch ratchet and try to break them free. May also try turning the center 8 mm shaft opposite direction to get them moving. Must be careful not to round the head on the center shaft… UGH! You made it look manageable, if not necessarily easy. I will get there. Thanks again for getting that camera in there, it looked like a struggle a few times, but I for one REALLY APPRECIATE the visual to know what I had to face. A face full of rust, lol.

Super helpful, I have an xjr and unfortunately the long bolt near the brake rotors has no clearance to come out because the parking brake caliper is right above it. Do you have any tips? I don’t want to remove the parking brake caliper given the hassle and things that may go wrong with the electric parking brake

Saw your other vid for sway bar link. I'm doing the same 2 items. Bushing in tie rod shot, play in hub. Did you see any tie rod ENDS available or only full tie rods? Either way these will help me plot my attack. I have multiple sets of ratcheting wrenches (Gear Wrench) Get them now, not later. You will thank me. Often!
