I have a 1996 X300 and this is quite a simple job to do. On the other hand I also had a 2002 X Type and had to change the alternator and this was a much bigger job to do. These Jaguar cars from this vintage are much easier to work on than the cars of the 2000's.
Good job! Where I live, there are garages specialized to do only starters and alternators. You can either bring your car, or bring only the part and they will repair it, for a very reasonnable cost. When you have another car and can afford to wait 2-3 days, it is often the most inexpensive way to go!
