How to string a guitar with Vintage Tuning Machine Heads

How to string a guitar with Vintage Tuning Machine Heads

Here’s a video to show my method of tuning a Fender 52 telecaster or G&L ASAT Classic Tele with Vintage Tuning Machines Tuners. It can be really frustrating to tune, as you can see in this…

Thoes tuners are a royal pain in the rear for sure i have the classic Vibe
Strat and same problem with those tunners pain in the rear for sure on the
B and hi E, great video tho man you did great

GetScaredGaming says:

Who the fuck designed those machine heads? why would anyone use them over
the others lol, fucking strings popping out for days.

shoominati23 says:

I have a fender modern player tele plus, and strings D,G,B and E have
string trees on them. I’ve found you have to put at least 3-4 winds on low
E to give it a better angle to the nut, but especially A, you virtually
have to have the string almost down at the bottom of the post where it
starts to taper out. If you don’t do this, the angle is too shallow and it
likes to sitar and cause intonation issues. Of course the modern player has
the 22 fret neck that is all neck, without the extension piece, and I’m yet
to find a replacement one anywhere,

twoslices says:

For the E and B you can wedge a toothpick in the slot as you push in the
string then pull it out when the the string is tight,be careful not to
break the toothpick off as you pull it out,the other way is to wedge a
small piece of cardboard into the slot after inserting the string

Marshall Jewell says:

Dude. Thank you. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to use
these heads until now.

terry o'keefe says:

It seems no one knows how to put them on, ok set the string post slot
pointing straight up, cut the string off with 3 string post length to wind
up,put the string in the hole all the way to the bottom of the hole then
bend it down to form a right angle, then hold it in place with your left
hand first finger then pull back on the string with your right hand with
enough tension to hold it in place, put your first finger on the string to
hold it down your other 3 fingers are together alongside the length of the
string with the thumb pressing together with the first finger this provides
the amount of grip you need to pull back then start to wind it up, as you
start to wind increase the tension a bit more as long as it holds there
then you have enough tension on it then wind it all the way up this will
stop the string from coming out. The secrete is to pull back, the reason in
the video you saw it coming out is because the string is like a spring and
the tension it creates is making it pull/slip from under his finger. I can
say a bit more on the subject that you can have each string at an exact
length, trail and error will teach you by looking at the pull down angle to
each machine head post, without posting a video I hope that there is enough
information to help you all.

Oliver Duggan says:

Thanks mate, very useful. Watching this it occurs to me I’m gonna try using
a match as a ‘wedge’ when stringing the B and E next time… I’ll let you
know

Omar Khalid says:

This video brought to you by Schaller Locking Tuners!

Matthew Clifford says:

So far, you are the only person I’ve seen turning the peg towards the body
of the guitar to tune up. Conventional logic dictates that this motion is
for tuning down, and that the worm gear design of standard tuning machines
will not lock in tune but continue to detune. Have you had any issues with
de tuning with your method?

Timothy Brown says:

Your video helped a lot. I clipped mine a little too short, but I got it
tuned up pretty good anyway.

rblkeats says:

Can you straighten the string after it pops out and try again without
cutting it?

WHChampWSM says:

Keeps popping out, f this lol

Quantametric Coluccio says:

I have a 55 reissue and I never have this popping out problem, that being
said, I always pre bend the strings (sharply with pliers) where they touch
the post which seems to give them a much better grip on the corner and
better dispensed pressure to hold it into place.

Tyler Vanner says:

I remember when I stressed stringing up on a regular guitar and then began
to enjoy the process, but now I have one of these vintage pegs and not
looking forward to re stringing

MinNyeAccount says:

This is how I do the b and e string.. You set the grove at an angle of 90
to the fret board, so you can get a good sharp bend in the string, then
just put it under the string guard and keep tension on the sting by pulling
it up while you turn them nobs.

Michael Wentworth-Bell says:

I freaking hate these machine heads!!

Jeff Dill says:

didn’t read all comments, maybe someone had same idea… what helps me is
to put a small piece of wood like a toothpick vertically into the hole or
horizontal into the slot…

Nirklas says:

I have this kind of tuners on my strat and the strings has never popped.
Not sure what people are talking about.

scottN1980 says:

I push the string in, when I bend it down I take it out and bend it abit
tighter, then put it back in and wind. Helps a little.

wuzzupize says:

Man, this helped me a lot, thank you!!

Ryan Shearer says:

Just recently ordered the 60th anniversary ’54 strat and now I’m really not
looking forward to restringing haha

John Thompson says:

Kicking my ass yet again hilarious. I feel better after an hour of trying .
Thsnkd man for the vid

Mountain Lyons says:

This video rocks!!

P. Sterrett says:

Those tuners are so quick and easy to put on. Just bend them. They go on
almost as fast as locking tuners…. and they don’t slip at all.

Mattias Ericson says:

Thanks! Helped me a lot! But why. WHY! Is theese knobs still produced?

Ashley Olson says:

This video was very helpful to me, I just re-stringed my telecaster for the
first time :)

Miloš Broćeta says:

I never had problems with this tuners just wind string with hand few turns
and then use winder. :)

MICHAEL DAVIS says:

I am a vintage Gibson man but I like the Fenders too. I thought these
vintage tuners were perfect. I have never used them but I always wished
that Gibson would have put these on. After you tighten the strings can they
still pop out?…and don’t these lock the strings perfectly so it won’t
come out of tune.

Bruce Beefington says:

Dude, you have just shone a light on my life. Got a Fender Marauder with
these suckers on the top and I spent four hours the other night trying to
tune it and I ended up sleeping on my shift at work. Thank you so much for
this

Pete Randall says:

Thanks mate! I’ve got an Eric Clapton Signature Strat. It’s wonderful to
play, but I’ve always wondered how people managed to string them with the
slotted machine heads. Your demonstration was really useful & informative,
though the thin E & the B look like always being a pain! Thanks again! Much
appreciated!

Mental Kingdom says:

By the nine bless this video! I have a Fender Squier Jaguar and I couldn’t
restring it because none of the videos were helpful at all. Thank you so
much for this. THANK YOU. I literally cried out of frustration so many
times because of that damn guitar. It was so nice to see someone else a
little annoyed with how the strings could pop out for no real reason. Thank
you so much for this video!

George Milkas says:

I got a Squier Fender Strat. with the exact same machine heads.. I presume
that older original guitars had the lining of the G B E machine heads more
deep so that the popping out couldn’t occure… pffff nowadays mechanics
should be better.. That is a wrong design decision they made over there. So
let’s hope that the newer machine heads will have better luck!!

:D

David Stewart says:

Hi Shane ,
Bought a new nash Tele and original 66 was all thumbs simple when you know
how Great video . Helped massively . Thanks for taking the time to share
the knowledge

Louis Saad says:

To stop the two high strings from popping out, PREFORM (PREBEND) the lead.
First put it in the hole and start to turn. This will give you the TWO
bends needed. GENTLY, using a needle-nose pliers, increase the two bends.
Works perfect every time. Just did this with an SRV Strat with Fender
250Ms.

Josh Tyree says:

not real vintage fender tuners- proper vintage fender tuners don’t have a
hole in the top – wasted my time

IceJones29 says:

so… for the high B and E strings, you just keep doing it until it works?
lol that’s basically the “technique” that was shown

jam4996 says:

I find it helps to stick a toothpick in the peg when winding it just be
very careful taking it out. Like you’re defusing a bomb careful.

MrTelecaster420 says:

I would suggest bending the end of the string at a sharp ninety degree
angle with a pair of pliers…

C Mc says:

My 85 Japenese Tele has these. Takes time to get used to the stringing but
it is so solid and never goes out of tune.

Leo Vester says:

I don’t think this should be presented as a how-to guide on restringing a
guitar since it doesn’t shows you how to tackle the high strings popping
out. That is about the only thing ppl really need help with. See Louis
Saad’s comment on how to do this the right way).

Andy Peet says:

Lol..well thats put me of…nice to see we are all human

cee que says:

well I thought I was bad but this is plain ridiculous, theres nothing to be
proud of in this video …..

MeMoving1 says:

Have to say as an oldtimer Fender Esquire 1966/ Strat ditto owner I have
never ever had any problems with this “poppingoutthingy”, (having this
said, I bet it’s gonna happen for the first time next time I change
strings:)
Listen, just give the dang string a sharper angel after sticking it into
that hole (don’t read it like that;) and you can keep enough tension with
your under your thumb aprox at the A-string level while tuning up! This is
the best tunersolution anyone has ever come up with! I’m still stunned with
all this new lockingtunershit, two holes, locking from front and
behind…even Gibson hasn’t got it. Believe me, Klusons or 70ths Fender
tuners rules! I wish I had Klusons with a “stick it down the pipe” solution
on all my Gibsons too…..but as far as I know they don’t make the in 3+3
style:(
Love you video!!
Cheers
