This guy Brutal is an FN genious. I did the screw trick and it works perfectly. Both my lights were loose. Self leveler still worked but the lights pointed to the ground. Now they work perfect! One question to anyone out there, especially Brutal. Do you think the screw might eventually break the plastic piece it’s digging into? Or should I do like another person did, crazy glue a nut to front of hole, and then thread a flat bolt through? Seems less likely to crack plastic.
It’s a 1 inch self tapping screw if I remember correctly. It was a while ago when I did this and sadly no longer have the car anymore. The area in the video that I screw it into is between the high and low lights. You should be able to see it pretty clear where to put it in at.
Hate to tell you but most new cars are like this now. I’ve actually replaced bulbs on the new CTS and a Saturn Aura and both had to have the front bumper removed to replace the headlights. Both people were quoted over 200 just to replace the headlight bulb and they were not HID so they were standard $20 bulbs. It’s just the way cars are being engineered now.
Thanks from me as well. I did this fix and it worked brilliantly. My only moan was having to take the whole front of the car off to change the xenon bulbs as the rear of the headlamp unit is unaccessible with out removing the unit which meaens major surgery. Big labour cost, big bulb cost and ludicrous Jaguar design….for owners! Buyers beware!
I went out and did this and it worked GREAT! I think the big thing is if they droop this will fix it. After 2 years the left one is fixed now. This is awesome. The right light I had my mechanic install a used light I got off eBay. They set it up and it has been too far up for over a year. I got it to go down so I think I am set. I will fine-tune when it gets dark.
I have a 2004 and I am going to try this. The dealer wanted $3500 for new lights and my local mechanic can’t fix it either. I have one pointing to the ground and another pointing up too much. I am going to try it since I cannot make it worse.
after less than a week, after the screw mod, the self leveling stoped working, when I switch igniton on lights no longer sweep and both beams are in the pointed down position.
Any ideas or a way to test the self leveling? or a fix?
Going to try this, by using a #8 1 inch pan-head metal screw.
2005 diesell
anybody had any problems
does the self leveling still work
I would suggest a little siliconcom on the tread to keep it water tight.
Thanks for the information..any more tips for S-type owners
Thanks for posting the video. Both my headlights started to droop on my 2003 STR after I hit a deep pothole. Dealership could not fix and wanted $2K for new headlights! What an easy 20 minute fix!
This fix works on a 2000-2002 s-type as well. However you need to move the drill location over slightly and i added a side screw to secure the L-R aim (pull both lights back to center). Thanks ! It works!
thanks for posting this, it really helped being able to visualize what needs to be done. I’ve been aware of the fix for some time, but a little reluctant to give it a go. this made me go out and do it, and it’s worked like charm. thank you again!
Wow,..!!! You are awesome . I can not thank you enough for taking the time out in your life to video and explain how to do this !! You saved me hundreds of dollars and now I can even hand adjust my headlights with the screw. I wish there was more people like you in the world,..you are a blessing !!!! THANK YOU !!!!!!!
Yes, thank you for this video! My headlights (left and right) both broke on the tiniest, slightest pressure when attempting to install Xenon bulbs. The plastic was too old, aged and extremely brittle. They both broke on the post underneath the adjustment knob. This fix worked great for me. I would warn others that there is no adjustment to be made if your plastic mounts broke where mine did. However, you can hold the lights where you need them and pin them back with the screw.
Thank you for making this video and thank Brutal for coming up with it. You saved me $1400 bucks at the stealership! The headlights STILL auto level on start-up even after you do this mod. I would suggest a 1 inch non-tapered screw. I used a 1.25″ and had almost too much sticking out. I was still able to close the hood w/o contact.
took literally 2 minutes to do, cant believe it. brilliant.
Good looking out sir! Fixed mine this mourning, kudos to brutal and Vance.
What car do you have now a XJR or xkr
Great mod!!!! Dealership fixed mine under select edition warranty… but that’s kool
Is it possible to just change the plastic part of the headlight verses the entire unit? Thank you!

Hi, nice video! Now do i have to first get a drill bit and drill or i can drill just with the screw?
Did this last week on my ’03 S-Type-R. Worked perfectly and fixed my headlights. The auto-leveler kicks in now that it has something to push against.
Nice video… Worked like a charm, I can see clearly now!
No problem glad it helped you out.

They will still adjust after this fix.
