Isuzu MU-X/D-MAX Safari Snorkel Installation || How to install a snorkel

G’day Guys and Gals!

In this video i show you all the steps involved in fitting a Safari Snorkel to your Isuzu MU-X or D-MAX. It is very similar installation however for most 4wd’s and the instructions supplied with the safari snorkel will specify all the tools and sizes of holes etc. The snorkel will also come with all templates necessary for the installation.

You will need a few parts and tools to be able to carry out this job they are –

-Stepper drill bit that goes up to 16mm
-hole saw bit 111mm
-drill
-die grinder and die bits
-sandpaper
-biscuit wheel
-touch up pain – same colour as car
-round file
-assorted ratchets, sockets and spanners
-trim/plastic rivet removal tool
-tape
-marker pen
-screwdrivers
-Sika flex sealant

They are the main tools and extra parts you will require : )

The installation begins by removing the Isuzu MU-X air box, inner guard liner and intake pipe that sits inside the inner guard. Double check the template aligns perfectly with the snorkel.

You then need to tape up the guard and put the template onto the guard. Using a marker pen, mark out your holes and remove the template.

Then using the stepper drill, drill out the holes to 16mm and a pilot hole for your hole saw hole.

Use the 111mm hole saw to drill out the large snorkel intake hole and then de-burr all of your holes. Test fit the snorkel with the bolts in and tape and mark your A pillar trim mount. Then drill out your A pillar trim mount holes to 8mm and de-burr holes.

You need to then enlarge the hole on the inner guard where the standard intake pipe goes through. Using the template supplied mark out and die grind out the hole to the larger diameter and test fit the intake pipe. Clean down all metal swarf and use your touch up paint to seal up all of the bare metal.

While the paint is drying you need to modify the intake pipe into the airbox. Remove the pre-spinner pipe and disassemble. Remove the ridge on the pipe and sand completely flat and then reassemble using sika flex sealant to make the intake to the airbox completely water tight. Seal up the drain bungs on the bottom of the airbox with sika flex as well.

Now its time to fit the snorkel, intake pipe and airbox back to the vehicle and double check everything is water tight. Now just chuck your inner guard liner back in and you can stand back and admire your awesome handy work!

Viliam Jasenec says:

Great video, did you locktite the studs into the snorkel threads? Also, how did you seal the holes in the A pillar.

Abs Hassan says:

Man. How much would u charge to do this to a customer car. Cause I just don't have the tools, skill or confidence to do this on my own

Watermelon says:

Are you going to put on judge bar or bull bar?

Steve RX4 says:

If you block up the water drains, I'd also advise to reverse the snorkel inlet – to keep out rain. If it was me, I'd leave the drains as is – they are meant to be one way valves.

Alexandros Douros says:

Awesome video mate. Keep up the good work

Dave Clarke says:

Top job what ever you do you do very well

Benny Banger says:

Nicely done Nick. If water does get in through the intake, during rain etc. where does it go? Maybe a stop cock would have been a good addition rather than blocking of the water outlet valve(s)? I don't know, just wondering.

Sean Cuffe says:

solid job Nick, she'll be breathing great now!
