Scotty, I am surprised at you. You say in the video that the brake shoes
are almost new. Hmmmm. Did you change brake shoes without changing the
wheel cylinder while you were at it? Lol. Love your videos.

Roberto Vitucci says:

Scotty, I purchased my 06 Tacoma from a man who admitted to using the
parking brake to stop the truck after the front brakes went out. I changed
the front brake system out. Everything worked fine. 2-3 weeks ago, the
drums started to make grinding noise. Now, the left drum is leaking fluid,
and it seems that the drum(s) aren’t working at all. Can you tell me what
all needs replacement? Thank you very much for your help.

Nyheen Jenkins says:

Leaking Brake Wheel Cylinders.. can that cause lot of mpg lost? seems like
i lost lot of gas mileage from the wheel cylinder leaking over time, i do
got plan fixing it soon but was wondering could that help in gas mileage
or it maybe a different problem

MMA says:

Scotty, I changed the wheel cylinder twice (with a new one of course) but
it’s still leaking brake fluid. Appears to be leaking from the inside
still. Any thoughts?

Anthony Mills says:

I am only 15 years old and I am a well known mechanic here in town. Lots of
people come to me. I have a customer whose rear passenger side break is
leaking. However it doesn’t look like this. It is a thick dark coat. Could
it be dirt build up? The pick up is either a 2001 or 2002 chevy pick up.

Max M says:

helpful and entertaining. thanks!

Eric Soyke says:

Thanks Scotty. I just came from some new brake shop I’d never been to
before and they said since my drum was leaking fluid I’d need new shoes and
even drums, he said the fluid was ‘pressed into the drum metal, they’re no
good now’. Plus then you want the other side done you’re always told.
Bottom line was he quoted me over 750 to fix the problem. Immediately I got
a headache and a voice inside my aching head said to go home and think
about it.

I did some research, watched your video, and instead spent a whopping 30
bucks on a new wheel cylinder, flared wrench, and brake cleaner. I know
what the boy and I will be doing tomorrow! Saving a whole lot of money
while getting a free suntan in the driveway. ;)

thenewimahich says:

Dumb question but listen. The guy i bought my 83 s10 Tahoe, said that he
just put new breaks on and i just replaced my wheel cyl and breaks looked
good so yea they are new… But they squeek really loud and they did not
before hand. this start a few weeks ago and i did the wheel cyl, break
lines, ball joints, a month and a half ago. What the hell is going on….
and it’s not the typical squeek… it’s a loud as long squeek when slowing
down at 30mph

William Todd says:

Thank you Scotty, I need to do this on my Bronco 2 for both wheel
cylinders. I noticed the other day that the brake fluid level was low,
this morning I actually had a few drops of fluid on my carport floor, so
now I know what’s going on for sure. You just saved me $100, ok a bit less
like $80 because of course I need to buy the parts but my local shop was
going to charge me $100 to do what you just did.

Jason Schwartze says:

Nice, thanks!

octivias dooley says:

what that means when u also see a wet spot on the brake booster but its not
leaking from the master cylinder and one more thing when I drive my car it
sound like an lawn mower lol….and it barley picks up speed a friend told
that I need manifold gasket….will that stop the lawn mower sound and give
it more power ??

Ashley Marie says:

THIS GUY IS AWESOME!!!!

Jim Smit says:

octivias dooley says:

Thanks great video!

bmworld says:

Hey Scotty! My emergency brake is stuck on. Could it be the brake fluid?
When the emergency brake came on I notest I had a harder time braking…. I
have not put brake fluid for about 5 or 4 years… The guy that put the
brake fluid bleed the brakes but over the years it sounded like it had air
in the brakes.. Why is That? But yeah what causes the emergency brake to
stay On?

Todd Istre says:

I just did this job on a 2001 ford windstar and now I know how to do the
brake shoes thanks to you scotty. Thank you for posting these helpful
videos

Kevin Smith says:

Tony Corbitt says:

You’re awesome Scotty

Byron Pelico says:

Scotty can i replace seal on brake caliper front or i need replace the
whole parts? because is leaking.Thanks

Brian Nobles says:

Hey thanks for this. I noticed fluid under my rear tire and looked up to
see that is was brake fluid seeping out of the drum. Came in to do a search
on the issue and yours was the first link identifying this problem. I can
do this..

Kp Adhikari says:

Very good one! Thanks a lot for making and sharing it.

OC Dreamer says:

Hi awesome video, I just have one question. when I bleed cylinder at the
end, do I turn the car on or off for the process?

stefan.agnello says:

LMAO at the shack!

octivias dooley says:

ok thanks.

Jeff Heiny says:

I have been having spongy brakes for the last few weeks and they finally
stopped working and I have brake fluid all over the inside of my rear
wheel, would the wheel cylinder be responsible for this issue? If not what
else could it be?

Lee Caspell says:

Hi,
So did you clamp your break line?

Jhonatan Torres says:

can a bad wheel cylinder let air into the brake line… my car keep getting
air no matter how many times I bleed it, but no fluid leak in the drums…
or calipers

dougk102 says:

Here in VT the steel nut rust welds itself to the line almost every time. I
usually have to cut the line before spinning the nut, then flare in a new
piece of line to the new wheel cylinder. Gotta love what salt does to cars.

Tom McLain says:

Is it ok to spray brake kleener in tne drum? To rid dust etc…

zerohunter64 says:

Hi Scotty I have been told that if you change one brake cylinder you have
to change the other side too because one will destroy the other is that
correct???

hunkydude322 says:

each auto techincian has his own personality etc…….., as long has he
gets the job done right and turns out good, thats all that matters becuase
they all striveing to get the same results, and that is getin done right
period. good work u guys scotty and Eric just to mention a few of my
favorties.

OC Dreamer says:

I changed the wheel cylinder and my car seems to no longer be leaking.
However, I still have brake issues. When the car is turned off, the pedal
is much harder to press down. However, when I turn the car on, the pedal
because extremely light and makes air sounds when I press down it. I
already bleed the valve for that particular cylinder to where only liquid
comes out. I did so with the car engine turned on. Now I’m kind of baffled

Steffan Spires says:

A regular wrench does work just as good as the wrench you were using

Tom McLain says:

1st time ever doing brakes. I am working on 2003 Corolla rear driver side,
non disc. After removing drum , springs etc… The wheel cylinder has
separated and is leaking. I can’t seem to reassemble. What do I need to do?

Irwin170 says:

Can rear brake drums be changed to be brake rotors and if it can how much
do u think Scott it cost to do it?

wwat wat says:

is there anything i should know
just in case i dont kill myself

ButtUgly Baby says:

best mechanic there is on you tube next to erick the car guy! thanks ganna
go figure out if my cylinders are bad because every time i break my my
tires lock up on the rear. things are getting kinda scary:(

nemrac fiftyto says:

How often does the line on the clynder come off that easy, specialy on a
older car if it were only this easy.

Arran Waugh says:

Thanks scott!

Wack Pack XJ says:

What’s in the shack Scotty?

dronald777 says:

I wish wheel cylinder brake lines and bolts would always come loose as easy
as in your video. In Ohio we put salt on the roads in the winter.Lot’s of
stuff underneath the car gets rusty because the salt encourages
corrosion.Even with heat and penetrating oil I’ve had brake lines twist
when removing the fitting. Then you’ve gotta replace a section of line as
well as the wheel cylinder. That’s A LOT of fun!

Steven Pothaczky says:

Good video. 🙂 Where I live they use a lot of salt on the roads so we often
have to deal with rusted out brake lines.

TheRicoMalibu says:

I see in tv someones is changing the rear drum brakes for disc brakes, to
have disc in the front and in the rear. what you tink about this
modification?

ole jonny kallenavn says:

maybe first fill up the brakefluid before presess?

BadBrad23 says:

You should invest in a Mightvac hand pump for 30 bucks. Screwdriver trick
funny. Would never just clean off contaminated brake shoes. Should have
changed wheel cylinder when changing the shoes in the first place. Always.
Just saying. Like your vids. 😎

Scotty Kilmer says:

do my video “how to fix an overheating car” to find the culprit.

YouSoundButtHurt says:

Did you clean the brake drum Scotty! 😀
