Question….
Could you have just bought/replaced the regulator or is it part of the alternator assy??

Thanks Again..

Skyscraper says:

Why not just replace the regulator and brushes? Save some bucks

Craig Nehring says:

Here is a little tip for folks looking to diagnose their alternator. If you can get to the front or rear of your alternator, try this…
With the ignition and engine OFF take a screw driver and place it on either end of the alternator, front or rear on the axis (the place where the bearings would be, on the front that would be the shaft where the nut retains the pulley/sheave. Move the screwdriver toward and then away and see if there is a magnetic attraction? No, nothing or very little? Okay, now go switch the ignition key to on but DO NOT start the engine. Repeating the test to see if there is now or not a strong magnetic pull or attraction? There should be a very noticeable change in the magnetic attraction. If not, it is more than likely your voltage regulator (that today also includes the brush assembly) needs to be replaced. The alternator could continue to perform for many years with new brushes installed, making sure to clean up the slip rings though. Sometimes a voltage regulator can be purchased fairly inexpensively but a rebuilt/re manufactured complete alternator may not be priced out of reach neither and may be the best deal.

Nice fix. Would like to see you re-build that old alternator, ie new bearings, brushes, cleaning etc. Also how to check the diodes. Thanks

Do me a favor and check if you can pull out the rack and pinion without taking the subframe out
