Fantastic video series! Have an ’05 Elantra with the same exact problem.
Compression test w/almost no pressure in cyl. 4 and cyl. 4 spark plug
covered in oil or coolant when removed. Plus white, smokey, sweet-smelling
exhaust. Head gasket seems blown. My father-in-law and I are going to do
the rebuild using your video as a guide and cross reference w/manuals. Is
it absolutely necessary to do the air test in cyl.1 at TDC or can you
forego that? Again, great videos! Thanks so much.

No not necessary, did the car over heat? I did that to see if I could
narrow it down to where the leak was from..when you take the head off,
inspect the cylinder walls on the block closely and also check each piston
to make sure they dont have much play.. GL

whats Hyundai prices like for OEM parts like “O” rings, specialist
fasteners, exhaust gaskets etc when compared to say Subaru or Ford

RatchetsAnd Wrenches says:

Generally speaking, a Complete rebuild is not cost effective when dealing
with most engines. I would rather replace the engine than do a complete
rebuild. But in this case judging from my previous experiences I dont think
a bottom end rebuild or an engine swap will be necessary. The cost for a
decent engine for this car in my area is about $1000+.

The engines you work on always seem to be so clean. Great job!

RatchetsAnd Wrenches says:

I buy and sell cars for a living now and majority of my buys are from
auctions. And for the most part you are right I try to stick with what I
know but sometimes I take chances if I think its worth the effort (Subaru
engine..lol) Plus you have to have a starting point somewhere to become
familiarized with a given model/engine etc..

RatchetsAnd Wrenches says:

I try to buy newer cars to fix, plus the camera might have something to do
with it.

dieseldolittle2 says:

In some makes of cars, dealer only and OEM parts appear to be very high in
price and its off putting when you are opening an engine to think that its
only a gasket and what you have to pay for that item does not seem real.
Lot of work in a rebuild – and it would be more successful if “O” rings and
gaskets etc were replaced with new parts. Is Hyundai good from this point
of view – ie not aggressive pricing and generous with technical info

dieseldolittle2 says:

Thx for the videos. I am just trying to work out why you buy from
auction/dealer sometimes. And when you do this, is it particular cars like
Hyundai Elantra that you go for? Is it that when you have done a couple,
you will have manual, tools, drawings and sources of parts sorted. Or are
you looking for a fault — like head gasket you can fix. So the make and
model does not matter?
