mellowman4207cc says:

Ty Eric great video

David Deponty says:

Thankyou so much Eric. At least I’m not working on a van but that helped
allot Thanks

Faisal Abdulaziz says:

thanks, i have a similar hydroboost unit on my 1984 bmw e23 7 series,…the
thing looks like a bazooka,,,and the accumulator died and it is much easier
to get to than astros…

floridaskater07 says:

Might I recommend an air ratchet and and a flex head wrench :)

Jacob Woodward says:

And the power steering works fine.

Sheehanjacobks96 says:

I dont think he likes to work on Astro vans people. Just making sure you
get that straight. :)

Jacob Woodward says:

Please help! I have a 94 Safari with the same Hydroboost Unit. All was good
intill i got on the breaks HARD to stop. It stopped fine but now the break
light is on and my petal is low and harder to push. And when i first step
on the break after the petal comes up (slowly) the petal almost bounces and
then sucks down as it engages the brakes???? What would cause this? (no ABS
light, it still works fine) Thanks, Jake.

Eric a says:

Hi, Eric
Did all the same procedures you mentioned in this video. But after I put
the fuel pump relay, the power steering was still hard, and the brake pedal
was down to the floor and wasn’t even coming up as it should. Any ideas?
I’ve already changed the power steering pump and the hydra unit. Thanks for
your help.

jarin wilson says:

We use to call these vans in tech school, A##hole vans. Doing front end
work on these is so simple, especially because they use a parallelogram
type steering setup. I’ve done dozens of hydroboost r&r’s. The accumulator
is generally what fails. I had a PS pump with a faulty flow control valve
blow the accumulator right off the hydroboost assembly…you talk about a
nasty, wet mess under the hood, yuck. Awesome video Eric

Matt Watkinson says:

Hope you got the radio code before you disconnected the battery. Got to
love those Astro vans.

Speakman Contracting says:

Just got out from underneath mine. Did you mention that you don’t like
working on Astro Vans! Lol. Too much crap in a sardine can.

Richard Cornell says:

Thanks man. Gonna try this soon. The pedal clip looks to be the bastard..

EricTheCarGuy says:

@xylenol15 Actually they use the same engines they just have a different
body configuration, they can be difficult to work on as a result of these
configurations as you point out however. Thanks for the comment.

kenneth adkins says:

hey man thanks a bunch just got 81 gmc c3500 that has one was wandering how
they mount you answered my question now want be no trouble to change I know
what to expect being a truck lots more room easiier.only one question are
these rebuildable and if so would it be cheaper.Oh ok so it was two
questions.lol!!!! thanks again

skornyakov67 says:

Is it ok to use Powersteering fluid for Hydroboost systems?? Or should it
be mixed with breakfluid?

Jeff Born says:

Eric, you should really invest into some cordless tools, such as the 3/8″
cordless impact wrench, I personally have a matco one, but I like snapon’s
version much better. They are not quite as strong as quality air tools, but
it beats having to drag an air hose around everywhere and in many
instances, saves you time by not having to use hand tools to take off
simple nuts/bolts. Honestly, when I used to wrench for a living, my 3/8″
cordless impact was one of my most used/favorite tool.

RallyScoob43 says:

IDK why I just watched this whole video….. cause I don’t even own a
freakin Astro van… Lol. Good video!

EricTheCarGuy says:

@lezneugj Awesome, I’m very happy to hear my video helped you. Thanks for
the comment.

James Billet says:

Yeah, u know he did! But what a great guy to take his time to save us all a
bunch of aggrevation!!! PATIENCE IS VIRTUE!

EricTheCarGuy says:

@tchourb1 I recommend starting with bleeding the cooling system. I did a
video on Diagnosing an Overheat that covers all the steps.

EricTheCarGuy says:

@sfeliant Not sure but air in the system can certainly cause problems so
you want to be sure you get it all out after doing a repair to the system.

nickmydog says:

Thanks.. the video looks very helpful..

JohnnyDesaint says:

thanx ill check it out!

James Billet says:

U r absolutely correct. Thanks for sharing.

Raymond Coleman says:

I am glad I watched this. Now I know how a hydro boost operates and that my
car does not have a hydro boost system. Thanks!

k5krusher says:

Did i mention i hate working on Astro vans?

lara688 says:

i could post a video of how it looks and stuff if it would help

James Billet says:

So that when ur cranking the engine it is not sending fuel to the engine to
allow it to start or flood the engine with fuel. Hope this helps

EricTheCarGuy says:

@Nightspank10 Yea I showed some of those in the tool show videos, at the
moment they’re not in the budget but thanks for the tip.

xylenol15 says:

I have a feeling this video exemplifies the stuff you said they don’t teach
you in technician school. Also, while I was watching this video I suddenly
realized that vans tend to have short engine compartments despite needing a
larger engine than a car. That must really bite…

Strangertothepublic says:

I had an astro once. i pushed it off a cliff on purpouse. Other than that,
great video! keep it up!

kenman1717 says:

great video. i have done a couple of these before, luckily not on any astro
vans. normally on like 1 ton duallys. i don’t like astro vans either. they
are really a pan for anything under the hood. aren’t those pliers your
refering to at 2:33 spark plug boot pliers. or i seem to remember the
snapon guy trying to sell them to me as such. i didn’t buy them, i think
they would cause damage to a spark plug wire. 16mm and 18mm are the most
common fittings on those lines. in a gm vehicle

EricTheCarGuy says:

@nickmydog Glad you liked it, thanks for the comment.

JohnnyDesaint says:

I have replaced the power steering pump, hydro booster, and hoses and i cant
get it to stop moaning.and thoughts?

SuperNormk says:

any way I love your video… Thank you…

iMatt65 says:

Great camera angles for what your doing. May be doing the same to my M1008
soon.

saltybugger says:

Great video. I have a full size van I’m having steering problems with and
have replaced pump and steering box already. It’s got a stiff wheel after
sitting. I’ve flushed the fluid. Watched your video trying to figure out if
its the hb or not. This steering issue started after the back brakes were
replaced and we can’t see anything similar that would cause this. My
mechanic is very knowledgeable but this got him stumped. We’re starting to
think there is contamination in the lines or hb unit.

Jhony Lopez says:

Why do you crank the engine with the fuel relay off???

James Billet says:

yeah, But at least he takes the time to help educate us. May save u a
fortune in the future. He’s doin this out of help to those that can’t
afford a mechanic. So what if he hates Astro vans . He’s genuinly lookin
out for those that take the time to appreciate his considerate effort.
THANKS ERIC!!!!

r3g3d17 says:

I work on chrysler minivans frequently and I thought I had it bad. I was
wrong D:

EricTheCarGuy says:

@sosquaided We’re not alone, you should read some of the comments below.
There sure are a lot of those vans out there though. Thanks for the comment.

James Billet says:

As always Eric, You R The Man!!!!!!! Thank you. Take care.

Kevin Malone says:

I drive a Chevy Astro as a work van. My god these are awful machines.

EricTheCarGuy says:

@shodanxx Thanks for the comment. You know what I find funny? The fact that
many will not lubricate an ‘o’ ring before installation but they will COVER
a gasket with goop when installing it, backwards, I just don’t get it.

rhkips says:

Chevy Astro Van: The only time I ever had the cops show up due to the
amount of expletives radiating from my garage. Needless to say, I now
outright refuse to work on these. 😉

pwerline574 says:

if its vacuum it should have a hose running to the intake manifold
