this … Still a big help to swap the locks .. thanks for posting

grund springer says:

Hi oldskool, first of all thanks a lot for this helpful Video tutorial!
Great job! After following your instruction I managed to change the door
lock. But after reassembling the door it won’t open properly. Wether the
inside handle nor the outside handle respond immediatly to open the door. I
need to pull a couple of times before the unlocked door will open…. Any
ideas for the root cause? Greetings from Germany, Andy

Tim D Stevens says:

Oh wow, the dealer in Brantford Ontario Canada told me it would cost me
$556.14 to fix this problem, I think maybe I will go to thew wreckers
tomorrow and get another unit like you took out and repair that one. Wow
sorry VW but you can stick it, this is a great fix

Jorge Hernandez says:

My problem is the alarm going off randomly. I think it could be water
related but not sure. Is there any way to tell which sensor is activating
the alarm?

Billie Jo Moore says:

A way around the alarm is by closing the doors, and using the key to open
the trunk. Then the alarm will turn off. Eventually the alarm might set and
go off again but it shouldn’t for a while. Mine just did that today and my
friend Robert is an expert on beetles so he told me to close the door and
open the trunk with the key. And it turned off the alarm

ramil awayan says:

I am now using my key to lock/unlock my door, the buttons in remote and
alarm (red light not blinking) doesn’t work anymore… How about that? Same
repair? Thanks

Jesusdragon737 says:

Awesome video! Hopefully I never have to return to it, but if my door goes
wrong, I’ll definitely be watching this again. Thanks!

Don Milton says:

I have a couple of quick questions. We just bought a 1999 New Beetle used.
Our NB is doing the same thing except the alarm is not going off. The
emergency flashers some times go off when you try to start but it will not
start. Most of the time it just wont start. Will this fix the problem also?
Also when i use the key to unlock is the passenger side to unlock as well?
I was thinking that maybe the previous owner had the problem and
disconnected the alarm horn. Great video! I am going to get to work on this
very soon.

sirbadgerboy says:

hey great video, would this be the same repair on my girlfriends beetle?? I
unlock drivers door and open but get no interior lights and after 30
seconds the car tries to lock itself again as if the car has been unlocked
but no door opened. the car starts without sounding the alarm, but i know
the alarm works as moisture was setting it off (now fixed). dont want to
tear the door down unnecessarily cheers for your help

Mr GShocker says:

Nice G-Shock!! I have had to get both my rear passenger ones done on my
Passat . What a pain. Big thanks to Hans for fitting.

Julian Hemingway says:

Great video, had to use it three times now, so really useful. But still
cannot get drivers door alarm light to go out when using just the key? Have
now replaced the driver’s door latch unit complete with new units twice and
now everything works perfectly, interior lights, lower door lights and
locks open and close when they should, but ONLY on fob buttons! If I try to
use the key, it will lock the door and arm the alarm, but will only unlock
the door and still leave the alarm light blinking. This has not changed
from one latch unit to another – both brand new (after market units)
Any more ideas?

William Bronson says:

Thank you. Getting ready to attempt this repair this weekend on my 16 year
old’s first car, a 2000 GLS Beetle, Cyber Green. In need of much TLC
because the last owner didn’t do anything. Wish me luck….

Gilles Baudin says:

thank you
my wife new beetle 2002 has a door problem
the diver side door doesnt open from the outside even with the key insert
in the lock
only from the inside with the manual handle i can open the door
shall i do the same procedure and take the all lock out and see what is
wrong?
what do you think?
thank
gilles and tika

Don Milton says:

Love the video! Our Beetle is doing the same thing. A quick question. The
remote is not working properly and the other door would sometimes unlock if
I unlocked the driver’s side twice. Is this all linked to the same thing?

Thanks!

Mr GShocker says:

VW need to do something about this as these poorly made door lock modules
effect a whole range of their cars!

55ATA3 says:

thanks, but you skipped all the parts I was looking for

Dan Swift says:

Good to know thanks for making the video and sharing this find

Donald Cowart says:

I messed it all up during this process. I got it all apart fine, sauntered
all the connections, put it all back together. Now I didn’t clip the inside
latch secure enough and it slipped off and the locking mechanism isn’t
unlocking the door from the outside. Now I can’t open the door to take it
all back apart. HELP please! (if there is any help for me)

Justin Daley says:

I had to remove the outside door handle of my beetle to assist with having
some signwriting along the door.
Your video was a great help and was appreciated.

eyestungdustnblind says:

IT’S REALLY TOO BAD YOU DID NOT HAVE A CAMERA / HOLDER / ASSISTANT SO THAT
ONE COULD SEE YOU DOING THE JOB IN REAL TIME ,, AS IT IS DONE . FOR SOME
MECHANICALLY CHALLENGED .I’M SURE MANY QUESTIONS REMAIN…..BUT GOOD ADVICE
,GREAT EFFORT ……..

Rafael Bruno says:

Its the New World standards that screwed everyone over, and really a
business tactic to keep the consumer rolling. The Problem is the world
standard requires LEAD FREE solder, so DUH anything other than lead will
FAIL.

Its the reason why, PS3, xbox 360’s fail in addition to heat and in this
case. The wear and tear of opening and slamming the door, like some people
do will crack the LEAD FREE SOLDER.

Look it up, companies praise the move as a GREEN earth friendly practice,
but they know these things FAIL.

Ask yourself, how many electronics from the 90’s that still used solder
still work if around? Almost all of them, they used solder with lead and if
around still work fine.

WE WANT LEAD BACK! Just not in our paints, and water. Electronics? C’Mon!!

Augusto Delgado says:

Mine is doing the opposite. My sensor thinks my door is open while it’s
closed so the door light stays on and it buzzes while I’m driving. Any
ideas? Thanks!

SooperSkoots says:

Hey what a great video, can i ask you a question about my beetle, i have no
door alarm to say its open nor do i have the red light on the door its self
illuminated when its open, the bulb is ok as i have changed it, any advice
would be great, thanks again for a great video……

scarabY2k says:

Awesome DIY. Gotta get this done on my nB.
Are you OldSkoolLover on newbeetle.org by any chance?

Serena Christiansen says:

How long would u stay this takes to fix? Because my machanic charges hourly
and I need this problem fixed. I just keep my door unlock and its not safe.

littlemama522 says:

You’re dancing around my problem, it even sounded like you mentioned it, my
door sticks and you have to yank to get it open. My mechanic said “a link
is probably bad”, can you make a video on how to fix that? Thanks!

oldskool1964 says:

Does the passenger side door open with the remote?

RigoNoble7 says:

THANK YOU!!! for making this video I looked all over google for some
answers and there was nothing except taking it to dealer and paying a
fortune.I was about to bypass the alarm system, take to the shop,or buy a
new lock mechanism, and then I found this video. You Sir deserve a medal of
greatness.Thank you very much. Words can’t describe the awsome feeling of
finding this video.Thank you for taking the time to make this video and
helping people like me solve this problem.sincerely your #1fan

oldskool1964 says:

Thank you! I’m glad these Videos are helping 🙂 At 06:05 I talk about
removing the Lock Cylinder. You do not have to remove the door panel to get
that piece out. Once you have the cylinder out, A locksmith might be able
to help you out and tell you more about the condition of the pins. 🙂 Best
of luck!!

Jaime borgia says:

Thanks very much you are an excellent trainer and explainer, thanks from
Mexico city!!!

stickmaninc says:

ok so i replaced my door lock with a brand new one and my alarm still goes
off when i go to start it however if i open the trunk first and then the
passenger door the car will start. also my key fob for wont arm or disarm
the alarm and wont electronicly lock/unlock the car and my little red light
doesnt come on on the door any ideas

Jonathan Santos says:

What car year will this apply to?

oldskool1964 says:

In the beginning either works. Once you have the door cover removed you
need to raise or lower your window to the right spot and remove the bolts
as shown in the video.

lCaptMorganl says:

the chime, (you can here @ 12:32) , goes off when i am driving. its very
annoying and just started happening out of no where. would that fix be the
same as this, just soldering it? or something easier? thanks!

oldskool1964 says:

Not off topic at all. It’s actually in the Door lock/latch mechanism as
well. It’s on of the micro switches on the latch. Open/closed;
locked/unlocked is all handled inside the latch. Try this repair. I
wouldn’t be too surprised if that fixes your problem.
