True dat. But it would be good to have a smaller number of these, where more protection is needed where the striker cant go, so its basically a striker for afghanistan.
Why not just make a heavy-duty baja truck? It was designed for this enviroment and worked on for decades.
same with the destroyers and other ships, they are just to big and heavy and are being easily destroyed by smaller ones and armies
I like humvees.. not in theater. getting shot up and blown up is not a fun time. so M-ATV’s and such like it are very nice.
Problem solved, just use one of the many MRAP platforms to better suit there needs.
Still dont know why they will not try out the Australian built Bushmaster not 1 Australian soldier has been killed in a Bushmaster in an IED event

so you guys know they did a couple updates including taking the open turrent off and putting a remote control turrent inside… the gunner is located in the back so hes playing a video game kinda

Combat is about risks. I could argue that you wouldnt get a grenade dropped in the top if you never went to war but sacrifices have to be made.
I disagree, the are moving to these because of the huge number of IED’s in Iraq. If you were going into an IED infested area wouldn’t you want an armored vehicle over an open jeep? Awareness wont help you when the IED is buried under the road.
Yeah I can’t argue with that, simply put though, if the “Humvee replacement” has an engine that sounds like a tractor trailer, than its anything but.
That thing has an open top turret, really they did’nt really learned their lessons.

we dont need all these behemoths bring back the ww2 jeep. these monsters give false security soldiers need to be out in the open and totally aware of there surrounding.there are places you can use these trucks but they should not be the norm
I dont think they will use these beasts everywhere, just on patrols where they expect IEDs.
bullshit the humvee couldn’t make it up that hill…i could make it up that hill with a ford focus. you want to really prove its worth then show a video of them test driving the shit outta it. I want to see roll overs, shocks breaking, an combat experience.
C’mon man, we’re neither stupid nor blind. The narrator at the beginning said “this is the up-armored high mobility multi-purpose wheeled vehicle commonly known as the hummvee”. That’s not the up-armored variant! There isn’t an armor on that thing! The producer couldn’t get the up-armored type that’s why he just lied to us instead trying to make a fool out of us. It’s a simple hmmwv infantry carrier from the marines designated as the m998.

to be fair, the Hummer is very good at what it was designed for.
The reason its not doing so well in Iraq and afghanistan is because its being used as a frontline vehicle, which it wasnt designed for.
It was designed like the willies jeep and M151 to be behind the main frontline.
The current production of Oshkosh M-ATV fits the mold of this type of vehicle. As far as replacing the Hummer, it will just be upfitted to better suit its designed roll. As a light, unarmored transport for troops and equipment, just like the Jeep it replaced.
Their is over 150,000 humvees,I don’t think their going to be replaced.
i agree. the cost of this one unit, who knows could be more expensive than a Stryker, if not then personnel/dollar or firepower/dollar,etc bang for the buck factor the Stryker might be a way to go.
Also, whenever a wheeled vehicle hit an IDE, often time the blast will destroy a wheel or more and shrapnel will just render the engine useless, leaving soldiers on the ground. a 6-8 wheeled armored personnel carrier really works more effectively.

The entire US military is slowly going armoured, any more and they’ll find its too heavy and too difficult to move reliably.
Half of the supposed HMMWV replacements are so big and heavy they may as well replace the Humvee with Strykers.
