My two back doors the bolt was stuck in the old door handle threads could not get them out. I ended up drilling both out and buying new bolts. UGH!
I use a piece of plastic film like a piece of Ziploc bag over the bolt head and push the socket over that and instant snug into the socket! I'd rather drop the piece of plastic film down into my door after I retighten the bolt than, like you say, to drop the bolt into no man's land LOL!!!!
you can take a piece of paper towel and put it into the end of your socket. So, the bolt head will be secure in the socket. It wont drop out.
There is the nightmare scenario where bold is rusted solid into end cap nut-insert and only way is to break end-cap off, take off door plastics, take out handle inside plastic part and then drill/saw off nut. Suspect able in moist cold places.
