You are a life saver. we noticed an aggressive hammering comming from
behind the toilet which had me very concerned. I did exactly what you
instructed and the noise is no longer there. Thank you.
Ok, in pipes of that diameter water hammer or hydraulic shock is not
dangerous. Closing valve suddenly won’t do major damage to your pipes. And
you close your valves not that fast , i mean it takes few seconds so the
effect is even smaller.
it worked. even if it is a temporary fix, this is the first time in 1 week
i’ve had no hammering. at first, when i initially cut the water back on and
started opening all the faucets, tubs, etc, the hammering was still
persistant (worse even) but eventually stopped. now the house doesn’t sound
like it’s about to explode. thanks.
did everything as instructed but still persists. i wonder what about my
appliances like refrigerator dishwasher and washing machine. i did not
disconnect any of those things.
I am not sure what I have, when I flush the toilets the walls vibrate and
it sounds like water hammer, when I turn on the water in the master
whirlpool, sounds like water hammer, downstairs toilet as well, does the
same thing, water hammer???? Not sure but I know I hate water hammer and
any other noise in the middle of the night. For the record, you do not
suck, water hammer does though.
If you are on your own well system, make sure that your water pressure tank
was completely drained before turning the power back on. Having the taps
all turned on, and not dripping, might not completely drain the pressure
tank, which is sometimes at the lowest point in the house.
@361Ross Ok thanks for the reply and info. I am experiencing water hammer
when i turn on the tap to the outside… but only when it is not fully
cracked open. So its either full throttle with full flow or little flow
with severe water hammer.
Really now? Did this actually fix the problem? and when you went back to
turn on the faucets downstairs, did you leave the ones on the upper floor
open?
How can this technique possibly fix a water hammer? Emptying and refilling
the lines won’t stop the physical principle behind the phenomenon, the
rapid deceleration of water when a valve is closed suddenly.

@361Ross at first it was on all taps and the fridge. now its upstairs
bathroom sink and tub and kitchen sink. but not every time.
@spk1973 are you sure you have a water hammer? Do you get the sound when
you only open one tap. If so you may have a loose tap washer.

and the solution was…
@adgrima Sounds like a leaky washer or Cartridge . Try changing Cartridge
or that tap.
@spk1973 That does not sound like a loose tap washer.
@biggalight does it happen with all the taps or just with one tap?
