I’ve repaired more Honda power antennas than I can count. Each one of them is a little different. They all seem to present their own challenges. In this video I cover just about every contingency when repairing one of these units.
I can’t stress enough how it may be best to go for a cheap whip antenna replacement. It can save you a lot of time and headache. If you have your heart set on a working power antenna in your Honda, this video should help.
There’s an extended version of this video available where I show how to power up the antenna on the bench and put the interior of the car back together here:

I just said fuck it and replaced the entire motor, all I'm tryna find is something besides that stupid special tool you're using to pull that silver thing off. Definitely not wasting like 40$ to get a toolset or waiting an entire week to get a special part, so tired of not being able to watch that smooth antenna go up and down. Lol
You could use some sodium hydroxide to get rid of the broken aluminum part. Shouldn't hurt the plastic just be careful because the reaction releases heat and hydrogen gas 🙂
I would put 10 likes here if I could. Very detailed and good quality. Appreciated!
My mom had a 1984 Oldsmobile cutlass supreme with a power antenna, damn thing broke all the time, last time it broke, she left it half way up
Hey Eric. Very informative. I have a 1989 legend its in great shape but the antenna does not work. The motor works but the antenna does not extend or retract. Would it be worth it to get it fixed or switch out to a whip antenna? Car has 106000 miles only.
Hi Eric, I have a 94 Vigor and was wondering if you could do a video of how to replace the electric antenna with a whip antenna please. I learn so much from all your videos, keep up the great work.
saludos amigo. pude sacar el tubo de metal, nada mas calentando el plastico que lo bordea sin necesidad de romperlo… espero te sirva de ayuda. saludos
Thank you! I just replaced the antenna in my '92 Legend! The white plastic piece at the base of the metal mast was longer than the stock antenna and I actually trimmed that plastic piece and the I trimmed the length of the notched cord a bit to get a perfect fit. So, your suggestion to compare the old and new antenna was very significant factor to getting this to work.
thank you sir Eric, I've watch your video 2 times and I think I already know to repair my Antenna does not work also.
How do you get rid of the extra 'click click click ' that often occurs when the aerial stops at full extension or retraction ? Happens on my Prelude and noticed same happen on this video after mast replaced. Lubrication hasn't helped in my case. Very interesting video
Beautifully described! Thanks for sharing
Best GSR video would be how to fix water leaking into trunk from sunroof hatch area
Great video, Eric. It encouraged me to keep at it. Got the metal sleeve out with a 3/8" pipe easy-out. The toothed plastic cable didn't want to pick-up when I tried to thread it in. Pop,pop, pop it said.. So removed the assembly and opened the reel side. No way to feed it without removing the electric motor cover. Spinning the armature and with the help of a small screwdriver I fed the cable into the reel area. By this time the brushes and springs had popped out and were clear of the armature so I chucked the armature into my drill and reeled in the cable. Feeling pretty smart, I put everything back together, correctly I think and installed the assembly into the car. When I turned the ignition on, the antenna retracted – some. Turning off the radio, the antenna extended – some. Not feeling so smart now. Could I have reversed polarity messing around with the armature? Seems like there is only one way to feed the cable onto the geared system…Any thoughts? Otherwise, there is always the whip antenna.
Thanks!
Just grabbed a power antenna mast just a couple days ago on majestic, so glad you've went into detail about this! Can't wait to put it into my 90' Accord
i always hated the look of my antenna on my integra.
i ended up ripping it out one day. just with brute force, ripping the sum'bitch out.
…still don't regret it
Edit: after watching the video, turns out that's what i was supposed to do. took me a good 30 minutes to rip it out though. i had to bend the antenna to use it as a handle to rip it out. that bitch was in there good.
They have this power antenna in the Civic Del Sol. (just fixed mine, thanks for the video!)
Nice video. I went to the junk yard for mine, and like you said they also come with problems. mine is perfect, but it does get stuck inside so I have to go to the quarter panel outside of it and lightly bang it quick and it goes up
These were also on Japanese civics not sure about US spec
sweet
i got this SAAB thing and will proceed
how long is the actual antenna when it's fully up? my antenna broke but I kinda don't want to fix it cause I don't want a long antenna sticking out.
