A subscriber was given this Honda EU6500is Generator for free from a neighbor. The engine starts, but stalls out after a short time. There are multiple issues going on. The ultimate fix is hard to believe.

I no longer use Harbor Freight Super Heavy Duty Degreaser in my ultrasonic cleaner. Harbor Freight changed the recipe. The bottle previously stated “NON-CORROSIVE”. Now it says “CORROSIVE”, “do not user on Aluminum”. It now damages most carburetors. Recently I have been using Simple Green PRO HD with good results.

Tweaks to governor spring sensitivity can eliminate surging issues, irrespective of whether that battery cover is on or off, in my opinion. You should have an air filter which gives the proper air flow restriction needed. The slits in the battery cover are fairly wide gapped so the minimal difference in restriction can't really be the reason the surging issue occurs aside from proper governor spring adjustment. But I could be wrong, though I've worked on a ton of small engines and have never seen something so trivial cause that issue?
Another great video. I loved that you picked up the tip about the battery box cover from an internet group. At some time in the future I’m hoping you will go into a bit more detail about the Honda carburetor servos. Thanks for a great channel.
Amazing that a subscriber got a 15 year old "new" generator for free. Zero hours is incredible.
your awesome dude
Who the hell makes the battery tray part of the intake system???
I have the same generator and had the same problem. I bought it for next to nothing, because it ran just like this one. Only had 14 hours on it.
The problem turned out to be that the battery hold down strap wasn’t hooked up, an it was blocking the airflow to the carburetor.
Hi James, No matter how much you think you know, there is always somebody who knows more, like my wife, for example.
Little trick i learnt back in the day was add a little methylated spirits to tank to dissolve water . (Petrol engines only)
Misc comment.
I use naptha to remove stubborn labels. No scraping or worrying about damaging the paint, and it doesn't leave any residue.
best channel on youtube
That is crazy a battery box cover could do that
I like your videos.I must say that you are the bestest.
Who would have guessed that box cover would do the surging. Not me.
It's very funny, oftentimes on these videos James will say "This engine may not run just right with the airbox and filter removed…" and usually I think that's just an over exaggeration, but in this case, that's essentially what was going on here. I never realized that airflow could make a big deal, I always thought the carb is the ultimate arbiter of airflow, but as we saw in this video, that's not always the case.
Great info and video thank you.
The water in the tank; ethanol based fuel?
That battery cover reminds me of all the Honda motorcycles when you modified the air filters or removed the airbox, the bikes ran horribly because they got too much air and leaned out.
Leave it honda to thinknof burinng the hydrogen sulfide gas from the battery vents. Love your tutorials.
Thanks James awesome generator
