No A/C Diagnosis: Honda (+ Follow Up…)

No A/C Diagnosis: Honda (+ Follow Up…)

I’m back in Ithaca, NY to visit family and help out a friend with her 2009 Honda CRV.

First thing we repair is the leaky washer bottle grommet, for which she received a $400 estimate from another local shop:

Also I do a fun quick DIY diagnosis on a non-functional A/C system.

Enjoy!
Ivan

Loverly repairs, You saved that lady from being ripped off, it's a shame that all repairers are not as decent/fair as you, it's worth being a fair man, your customers value you :-D.

I imagine that the gromet starts to leak from the outside where in fits in the cast bottle, perhaps filling the outside groove with rubber solution or similar would stop it.

Because i'm an evil sod, i would have bypassed the relay from the start, i don't think i have much patience as i've got older lol.
A frend had a motorcycle that was electric start only (silly design), i jumped straight to the starter solinoid trigger input with 12v, oh it worked :-D, (Faulty connection to the button).

Great job! The first thing I do, not having any diagnostic equipment besides a light meter, test light and a cheap old reader. And because I’m by nature, lazy and old, the first thing I do is swap relays. The price in auto repairs are getting ridiculous. My step daughter got a quote on a timing belt, idler pulleys change at a local shop, quote came back, 1,135.00 dollars! Wasn’t too many years ago they ran specials on 4cyl timing belt change for 250 bucks! I had her call The Hyundai dealership, they did job for 460.00 . Moral- always to get more than one estimate! If you can find someone like Ivan, take him a doughnut, compliment their ugly children, anything to garner a good relationship. Honest mechanics are getting as rare as hen’s teeth!

DIY Misfit Mechanic AT WORK says:

Wow, I'm a dumbass, I went searching for that video, because I remembered you calling the shop about the amount of the estimate. Then I come back and find that you posted a link to it in the description. LOL
Great diag on the relay. Guess the contacts on the load side inside that relay were totally spent.

Hans Auto Care says:

as usual awesome job, but a powerprobe would've saved you 20 min

Nice thorough diag man, nothing left to chance.
My A/C guy always goes for those micro relays first on a Japanese car of that vintage, very common.

Matt Way says:

I replace these at least weekly. Lol. About 70% of the time you can tap the relay and all the sudden “click” goes the compressor. First place I go now for AC problems on Hondas. Another good one dude. Thx!

Great vid and diag Ivan. So refreshing to see diag using everyday tools and applying sound testing and logic. Needs to be more of these type vids I reakon.

Josh Benney says:

Sweet! So easy and simple diag!!! You should call this part of the vid as a tip video or something. That is pretty cool video. I learned something about control and load side with simple tools, lamps to. Wow. Many thumbs up from me!!!! Great job Ivan!

Tony Lanceley says:
