How To: Change the Air Filter on a 2016-2020 Honda Civic

These step-by-step instructions and video detail how to replace the cabin air filter in your 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 Honda Civic. The replacement procedures will be similar for select Honda CR-V and CR-Z models between 2011 and 2019, as well as select 2018 and 2019 Honda Odyssey models. Replacing the cabin air filter removes contaminants from the outside air before it enters your Honda’s cabin, and can improve your car’s air flow and A/C performance. Your 2016 to 2019 Honda Civic’s owner’s manual will detail the replacement intervals, but if you notice a dirty or clogged cabin air filter, you can replace the cabin air filter more often to ensure optimum performance and cabin air flow.

Your Honda Civic’s air filter helps trap and remove dust, dirt, and contaminants from the outside air before entering your vehicle’s engine. Changing your 2016 to 2019 Honda Civic’s air filter is a simple maintenance activity that can improve fuel economy and engine performance. It’s recommended that you change your Honda Civic’s air filter every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, but your Civic’s service manual will detail the manufacturer’s maintenance intervals. A clogged air filter can cause your vehicle to misfire, make unusual engine noises, or you may smell gas when starting your Honda Civic. Our detailed step-by-step instructions will help you perform an air filter replacement on your 2016 to 2019 Honda Civic to help keep your car running at its best.

Open and support the hood… and locate the air filter housing.
Unclip the fasteners on either side of the housing.
Lift the lid of the assembly… and remove the old filter.
Make sure the inside of the air filter housing is clear of leaves and debris.
Put your new filter in place, making sure all its edges are flush with the assembly.
Lower the lid of the assembly… and make sure it’s seated properly.
Clip the fasteners back into place… and make sure the lid is securely in place.
Close the hood.

Use 8mm socket with extension to remove the screws as they are tight as all hell. And don't try to tighten them back like they were cause they break easy (don't ask how I know this.)

Glenda Mallamaci says:

Your video was the one that actually helped me with my 2018 Honda Civic. The other clips didn't show removal of screws to get at air filter. Shouldn't group 2016 – 2019 as they're different! Thank you.

Awesomesauce says:

Not at all helpful for the Civic Type R, which looks different and has clips you remove by hand, no screws.
