Honda Accord Cruise Control Failure Repair

In this video I show you how to repair an issue on 1994-1997 Accords that causes the cruise control to fail. The output linkage is made of plastic and is pro…

Yes that would temporarily resolve the issue if you are able to get it down far enough. The rust can eventually fully eat through the cable and cause it to break though.

It’d be pretty annoying to be stuck with a running engine and no throttle control.

The accelerator cable is under 10 bucks online and easy to replace. Personally I’d go that route.

misterhare says:

Yeah, it looks like it might have been the cable being rusty. A good stomp broke the rust. Should I just treat the cable with some bike chain grease?
Also, I realized I have the same cracked throttle linkage for the cruise that you explain in this video. WTH?! Thanks for making these videos. Super helpful to the backyard mechanics.

Bushougoma says:

That piece can get pretty brittle after years of getting baked by engine heat doesn’t take much to damage it. That’s for the cruise only if it’s broken the gas pedal will work normally you just won’t have cruise.

First make sure the throttle reel (the metal one to the right) operates normally push it down and slowly release tension on it. It should snap closed. Check the pedal as well if it’s also operates smoothly. You have a rusted throttle cable binding up in the plastic sheath.

misterhare says:

I cracked the plastic snout when I was replacing the starter. Now my gas pedal is stuck. Are these two things related, or do I have some other problem causing the gas pedal to be stuck. Thanks.

Bushougoma says:

If all of that checks out I’d remove the module and open it to inspect for cracked solder joints on the PCB.

Especially on the connector pins which could reseat when you unplug and reconnect the module.

Bushougoma says:

Are you sure it not just an intermittent clock spring in the steering wheel? Does turning the wheel back and fourth or holding it in a certain place allow the cruise to engage? If so I’d check it for continuity.

If it’s not I’d check the pins in the module and the female terminals in connector to make sure they’re making a good connection. Check the wire to the module and make sure the insulation isn’t pinched, damaged, or abraded in any way.

i got a issue. got a 95 accord and the cruise control only works once after unpluging and repluging inthe control box in the dash. wat would that be? jfalk88@gmail.com

Bushougoma says:

There are two fuses located in a junction block on the left side of the dash fuses 13 and 3.

Fuse 13 powers the cruise control unit and the indicator lamp. Fuse 3 sends power to the brake light switch to tell the module when to disable cruise when you apply the brake.

If the fuses check out I’d do a continuity test on the clock spring behind the steering wheel. Since both the power and control switches utilize it. Put one probe on the input on the wheel and another on the output harness.

Where is the cruise control fuse on a 2000 mitsubishi galant. It use to work but now the cruise control light doesn’t even come on

thank goodness i bought a cold air intake. gives you so much more room and engine bay looks cleaner

JDWATUP says:

@Bushougoma Thanks, I really appreciate the help.

Bushougoma says:

I’d recommend removing the modulator then disconnect the end of the cruise cable from the throttle body.

Just remember to plug the modulator vacuum line after removing it.

JDWATUP says:

@@Bushougoma Say if I just snap the cable (Cut it) from the fire wall. Would it cause any serious damage?

Bushougoma says:

I see. I glanced over the fact it was a 92 since on the 94-97s the modulator is on the passenger side firewall and doesn’t open up much useful space under the hood.

JDWATUP says:

@Bushougoma I appreciate the reply. Reason being, is I want more space. Whenever I change my belts it just gets in the way. Just rebuilt the engine, so thought I’d ask.

Bushougoma says:

No there is no need for it other than convenience.

Sure it can be removed but what advantage do you intend to gain from it? I don’t see any reason for the effort.

If you really want to remove the parts under the hood the modulator and linkage can be pulled easily just remember to plug the vacuum line on the intake that went to the modulator.

JDWATUP says:

@Bushougoma Do you actually need “Cruise Control”? I drive a 1992 Accord & my cruise control went out, but I never use/used it. Just wondering if I could remove it from my car. I don’t find it necessary for me. Please reply..
Thanks!

Bushougoma says:

Fuse number 4 in the under dash drivers side fuse box.

The back of the cover will have the fuse diagram on it. If the light on the switch isn’t coming on the likely culprit is the fuse.

Where are the cruise control fuze? I have a 94 honda accord and the cruise control switch in the car won’t light up. Is it the fuze?
