or you can just loosen the tire until the cable comes out of the latch a
couple inches then put your hands on either side of the latch and give the
tire and latch assembly a quick push up and it falls loose every time.

After struggling for over an hour trying to get the spare tire off, I was
so thankful to see this on YouTube – I am not crazy! This thing makes the
spare tire useless. The dealership said it needs to be replaced, which is
$275 for the same thing. What’s the point if it doesn’t work? Are there any
alternatives out there?

Mike Trott says:

Is that the absolute most ridiculous lifting fixture you’ve ever seen in
your life???!! My Gawd! There’s snow on the ground, you’re on the side of
the freeway with a flat, and they expect you to be able to get your spare
down from this contraption??? How could that have ever made it to
production??? The “engineer” of that should have been laughed out of the
room when presenting this design… amazing that ever made it to
production. Guess what? The tire store I took my flat to couldn’t figure
it out and actually showed this to me telling me they would have to cut it
off… now I see exactly why they thought it was froze up. Wait til I show
them this video!

Rusty Shackleford says:

+Annie Lou Risley is right i used my tire iron to push the latch over, im
lucky i had a flashlight though! cleaned the dirt and rust off and hit it
with the WD and then some thick grease to keep the WD in there and nicely
sealed from the elements.

Brad Smith says:

Onehdnetwork I have read the instructions many times. as a tow truck
operator we offer roadside assistance thru gm and this system is garbage.
They tell u to balance their shitty little jack on their shitty little
wheel chocks and jack it up. Impossible on ice. I carry a 3 ton floor jack
and lots of tools and more than one occasion I resorted to unbolting the
entire system and still had a hell of a time removing the tire from the
latch. Not a pleasant job in the rain, snow or at 30 below zero

Etragan333 says:

It’s winter in Ohio and I just got a flat. Luckily I was at home or I’d be
screwed right now. This video saved my butt. I had to use vise grips versus
channel locks due to not being able to get any type of good angle to hold
them. clamped it on, had a friend raise via cable and then it dropped.
Thanks!

Mart Bosc says:

Very very helpful thanks

Kristi Bakken says:

Just spin and wiggle the tire as you lower it. That’ll trip the secondary
latch over and it’ll come down. If it doesn’t work the first time raise it
back up and try a couple more times. I’ve lowered 100s of these tire (in
Wisconsin) and the spin method works 90% of the time.

Angel Santos says:

Thank you !

mcmanustm says:

Thanks!!! Saved me from a mental breakdown. My spare was installed upside
down by the dealership and was stuck. I used the end of the tire iron like
a previous poster mentioned and it came off slick as snot! Thanks!!!

Chuck Luck says:

Is everyone in this world stupid or what? The owners manual doesn’t tell
you the truth. They must be stupid too! The thing works just fine! It
does what it is designed to do. It’s simple! If the spare becomes loose,
the secondary lock kicks in. When you loosen the spare…duh! The
secondary lock engages. Exactly what it is supposed to do. If you look
underneath the spare, there is a spring. If that spring expands, it
engages the secondary lock. Here’s the secret. Just pull down on the spare
as you lower it. This keeps the spring underneath taught, thus keeping the
mechanism from engaging. It’s the simplest of mechanics people!

Gary Madsen says:

I love youtube, that saved me from getting out my torch!!

Annie Lou Risley says:

Thanks, knowing the problem, I cranked until the tire started lifting. I
reached up through a stud hole with a long screwdriver and pried the
secondary latch in enough to release it. I then cranked it down normally.
GMC sucks at design. A $40,000 truck and you get crap. They paint the frame
with WAX. What a bunch of idiots!!! I would rather have nothing on the
frame, that way I could have it professionally and properly undercoated. A
2005 and the shock mounts are rusted off already.

B Martin says:

This is great!! Thanks for the vid!! FYI, GMC Yukon has the same issue—no
surprise!!

Mitchell33333 says:

Hey thanks guys! I’ve been trying to inpress my father lately and this
video helped alot!

j ramiah says:

thank you!!! I love the internet.

deedubya286 says:

Now I see how the stupid thing is supposed to work. I spent over 3 hours
yesterday trying to get the damn spare down. Fortunately I was in my garage
and not beside the road somewhere. I finally resorted to using my angle
grinder to cut off the flange holding the tire in place. I’ve removed the
winch and now, with your help, I’ll be able to extract the secondary latch
and cut the offending hook off so this never happens again. Thank you.

tractorbandit01 says:

You my friend are my Hero! Thank You Very Much! Sweating my balls off
trying to get this. I Salute you!… 🙂

TheRabidfox11 says:

I agree these fuckin engineers dreaming this shit up. Should have to change
there own tire, but i’am sure they don’t.They just let the poor bastards
like us try and figure it out. They Laugh about it and collect there 50-to
80,000 a year or more.Oh didn’t think about weather in WI. or the fact that
No Body takes there spare down twice a year just to lube the mech. GM SUCKS!

Colton Blumhagen says:

What I recommend most owners do is just grind it off to save you the hassle
of being on a busy highway trying to remove your spare.

bull mastiff says:

After being stranded with a flat tire for hours in Houstons 100 degree hot
day on the side of a freeway with a spare that was lock up & unable to
remove & having to call a tow trucked to get my truck back to the house,
and spending $250 , my spare will be cut off this pos rig and thrown in my
backseat from now on what a f**** joke.

Navyshannon says:

Very helpful thank you!!

Pharaoh Prince says:

I hear them talking shit. Plus the douchebag slut women (hays kansas?). Tj
got mad? I saw hays ks in search bar. Just a coincidence… You need to
shut the fuck up. Only a redneck mason amerikan would of invented something
like this. You keep your fucking distance from me. I dont like you. Or any
of you people in kasnas for doing this to me. (LIES… nothing but lies…)

John Walker says:

Thanks guys for the vid,but once again a Chevy Piss poor design..what if I
needed my spare tire in an…uumm …let’s seeeee..A FUCKIN
EMERGENCY?!!!!…how does a soccer Mom,in a snowstorm ,with her kids,know
WTF channel locks, lips, secondary latch mechanism is suppose to be?…i hate
it when engineers try to reinvent the EFFIN wheel!!!

Ed Wilson says:

Thanks for the direction I was wondering what the heck I was doing wrong .
Channel locks wouldn’t move mine. Finally beat it out making a space with a
wedge. cut that piece off after it was out!

ballsdeepinyourlove says:

Thanks! What a pile of crap this part is… Your video did the trick!

burninrubber427 says:

Great video! I tried to take mine off to go racing and drop some weight on
my D’max. Ended up just taking off the 15mm bolt that holds the whole
mechanism on, but this is very helpful and much appreciated

wesbaker21 says:

I have a 2006 Silverado. This helped me find out what I was working with.
As I could tell your safety latch was rusted so I decided to spray some
lube on the safety device. Then what you do is let enough cable down to
clear the jack. You need to hold the wire to the side and jack uo into the
bottom of the safety device. This will not damage the cable just put a bend
in it. Jack the tire up all the way then when you bring it back down your
tire should come down. Careful it might fall on you.

MrAndo420 says:

Easy fix grind off secondary latch install industrial strength zip ties

OneHDNetwork says:

its not a poor design, its just the idiot that put the tire up in the first
place had the face of the wheel pointing up into the vehicle, and not down
to the ground other wise that would of never happened, that latching system
is actually there in case you don’t want to put the spare tire back up or
the tire that went flat back up, so it doesn’t drag on the ground, next
time make sure the face is pointing down to the ground and you will never
have this problem, 5 years Discount Tire Co FTW

This helped a lot, but on my 05 silverado, I took off the license plate and
was able to see and reach in there very easily.
