Intake Manifold Gasket Replacement/Upgrade 1997 GMC Sierra

I had to replace the intake manifold gaskets on my truck again. This time, there is an improved design gasket which should be a longer term fix than the OE s…

Furds do not run long enough to leak, they catch fire or the Eco-Garbage
engine goes into limp mode…

beep says:

Fel-Pro is the one to use, the 350 is a 500,000 mile engine.

AVTreasures says:

Thank you Robert! I appreciate you watching my video. I didn’t get a lot of
footage of this job, but I tried to highlight some important points along
the way. I wanted to show the new style gaskets especially as I hope they
are a more long term fix than the OE style gaskets have been. I hope your
job goes great! Taking your time is a good thing, that way you’ll know it
is done right plus you saved a lot of money too! You are welcome, thank you
again for watching and for your kind words!!

Robert Matasich says:

Good vid man, you make it look easy! I got a 98 Silverado 350, bad intake
gaskets and changing that stupid spider with the upgrade. I’ve been on it a
while only get an hour here and there, but it’s worth it. The satisfaction
of doing my own work and saving the cash is an incentive! Extra thanks to
people like you that make these helper videos! Thanks a lot!!!

AVTreasures says:

Those are 3M #07481 (A-Med) surface conditioning discs we are using. Check
your distributor, if it is not lined up correctly, that can cause the
problem you describe. Thanks for watching!

AVTreasures says:

Usually around $500 or so at a professional shop. Thanks for watching.

PhuckYewMaine says:

About how much does a mechanic charge for doing this?

CEngineer2010 says:

@4:33, I see you are using an angle grinder to get rid of the old gasket
surface. I haven’t seen this way to much in the past. But I have been
seeing it more and more in 2013. What grit are you using on those pads?
Thanks…. I have 1997 Chevy K1500. Its losing coolant all the time. No
leaks under the truck. Also it stumbles all over the the place when you hit
the accelerator. It will stumble for a good 15 seconds before it will take
off. I’ve replaced the injectors to the new electronic spyder.

David Smith says:

Thanks friend. Believe it or not I have been in the auto repair business
for 35 years but I value your opinion. I am a transmission man and do not
profess to be an expert in any field but trannys.

AVTreasures says:

That’s a common problem with these engines. It is likely the intake
manifold gaskets. Also check the heater hose fitting at the intake. They
can leak as well. There will be white residue around it if it’s leaking.

AVTreasures says:

Yes, you are right, this can happen if the gaskets are not replaced soon
enough.

AVTreasures says:

Hey Dave!! Oh cool, I didn’t know that. I just figured Fel Pro made them!
Me too, you would think they would put that information on the label. I
looked on a gallon the other day and it did not say. I will just keep
mixing up my own so I know for sure it is!! Thanks Dave!

AVTreasures says:

Hey Brett!! Thanks Brother, exactly right!! This is my road trip vehicle. I
know I will get there and back in my GMC!! The new gaskets are a much
better design I think. They should last for a long time! Cool, you have a
couple of classics there. I like those older S-10’s, that body style is
cool!! Thanks Brett, you do the same my friend!

Hv1245 says:

Hay ray great video my dad had the same problem with his truck but it’s fix
now I’m getting my first truck soon its a 1979 chevy k10 with a 350 v8 and
a five speed I love the old k10 and c10 trucks!!

David Smith says:

If they get bad enough they will leak coolant into the crank case and eat
the bearings up. My cousin learned this the hard way.

Fritz Rochester says:

Hey Ray !!! Great Job Guys !!! Tommy is on his Game !!! You 2 tag teamed

AVTreasures says:

was hiding from you. Great, glad you liked it Matt. OK, I’ll be glad to
answer them for you my friend! I’ll talk to you over there….

lazye785 says:

This was a great video I have to have my replace I have a leak and good
coolant in my oil so I need to fix it fast

AVTreasures says:

Thanks Mom, glad you liked it!! Tommy did a great job. I couldn’t have got
it done without his help. I feel a lot better now that it is done, and with
the new style gaskets.

AVTreasures says:

Hey Thanks for watching. I appreciate your comment!

Mike's Random Channel says:

Boy this ole gal gets the red carpet treatment. Got plans for mine coming
up soon, in two mores months she’s paid for and I’m already getting my list
of things that need to done to keep my rig in good and get long life outa
of her!!! 🙂

Fungus Exterminator says:

Ray, I’m in the process of doing my 96 1500 now. I got most of the stuff up
top disconnected except for that stubborn power brake hose at the manifold.
Man that thick wiring harness was a bear. Never could get that plug out of
the alternator. I tied the harness up with a bungee cord. Say, those 2
aluminum tubes that hook into the top of the manifold…do you just bend
them up or does it unbolt from the rear to pull them up? I bent them up a
little, but I’m afraid to bend too far. Great Video!

iworkforbudlight says:

Great video, my gosh that radiator fluid was clean. wish I could say the
same for mine. Aloha

AVTreasures says:

Thank you very much Brother! Yes sir, having the lift, the tools and the
help is nice on a big job like this. It runs a lot better now, I think that
distributor cap was causing some trouble that I didn’t even notice. It runs
better than it ever has, or at least it seems that way if you know what I
mean!! Thanks for the great comment Steve!!

AVTreasures says:

Hey Pablo! No problem, I’m glad that my video was helpful for you! Thank
you for watching!

rotarycomptech says:

hey ray those gaskets are made by a company down here called modern
silicone I’ve always wondered if that new 5050 mix of antifreeze contains
tap water or distilled water

.mlh says:

It has just started to act up within the past couple of weeks and I did
hear what sounded like a vacuum leak for about 5 seconds the other day.
Could it be just a regular ol vacuum leak somewhere else in the motor? I
have been adding coolant to the truck 1-2 times a month as well.

AVTreasures says:

Hey John!! Man, they are so much better than the OE style gaskets. I wish
the metal style had been available when I had to do these back in 2004,
they would probably still be fine!! Thanks John! I really appreciate the
comment!!

AVTreasures says:

I’m not sure, it could have a vacuum leak somewhere but that is not likely
related to the lower intake manifold gaskets. The coolant loss probably is,
as this is very common with these trucks.

holy says:

i found the problem. lol, leaking water pump. lmfao.

compdude957 says:

Hey Ray! Just got around to watching this video. I hope that gasket you put
on there lasts you a while! So far the one on my Yukon seems to be hanging
in there but it still has that very small leak at the water pump. Great
video man!

AVTreasures says:

Hey Nash, how’s it going!! Thanks man, this is a common problem on these
engines, as well as the 3.1 and 3.4 GM car engines. This is the second time
these have been done. I hope the new style gaskets hold up longer. Did your
Dad use this updated gasket design on his? Oh wow, a 1979, that’s awesome
Brother! I like the old C and K trucks too! That body style is cool!! My
Dad had a 1978 Big 10 (C10) when I was growing up. I wish we still had it,
it was a great truck!

hvactecster79 says:

Great video Ray, gotta keep that puppy in grand shape for the road trips !!
Purring like a kitten again now. I like those newer gaskets, should really
make a difference. I have a 88 S-10 and an 84 C-10 that haven’t been
touched/used in years I am hoping to start on soon as projects to try and
get back up and going. My old service trucks that I hung onto. May just
sell the 84 cheap and use money on the 88, it was GREAT on gas, lol. Take
care, Brett

AVTreasures says:

Hey Justin! I think the new design gasket will hold up a lot better. We
have been using them at the shop for a few years now and none have came
back leaking. That’s great Justin, sometimes you can go a while before the
leak gets really bad on those pumps. I have seen them let go all of a
sudden too. Thanks for the positive feedback!!

Pablo Fierros says:

Thanks this was very helpful i got a 96 silverado

Mike's Random Channel says:

You are 100% right Ray!!! getting that antifreeze out of there when it gets
that acrid smell to it is a must!!! Even if it looks clean the PH balance
has changed and joined the dark side and become corrosive!!! 🙂

AVTreasures says:

Great! Glad you found it. That’s a lot easier job than the intake manifold
gaskets. I replaced the water pump on this truck back in 2005. It was the
original pump.

Nancyrockart says:

Great work…enjoyed the video…Tommy did a super repair…your ability to
explain it all was TOP LEVEL…I know yu are glad to have that done!!!!!!!!

Fungus Exterminator says:

Thanks, Ray! I’ll throw a packing quilt over the engine and do some
crawling and find it. You’re a big help, buddy!

sparkyks says:

I need to get my intake gasket on saturn replaced. It is a major pain.
Trying to get the community college to do it. Need access to the bottom of
the car with a lift.

AVTreasures says:

Hey, thanks for watching my video. Sorry I am so long responding, I was
away from my computer for a couple of days. Those fuel lines go to a
bracket at the back of the block, you have to take out one bolt on that
bracket and then you can push them out of the way. Don’t bend the aluminum
tubes, it will make them harder to get back in place later. If you still
need more info, send me a PM and I can email you more information. Thanks
for commenting and I hope everything goes smoothly for you.

AVTreasures says:

Hey Steven, thank you for watching!!

holy says:

My truck runs excellent, perfect temps, clean oil and im losing coolant and
I dont see any leaks.

Dave Creu says:

Hey Ray! That is one awesome GMC there buddy, and you take super good care
of it! Roll on!!
