Mine is for a van with throttle body injection. Not sure if is is a W or
not. It didn’t make the van run any better. My problem is something else. I
have replaced just about everything but it still runs rough and stinks like
gas.

Dead Ballo says:

The check engine light isn’t going to light up due to bad wires, especially
on older rigs like ours. It has no way of knowing. All it does is monitor
the various sensors like oxygen, egr, maf, etc. and if they’re out of
bounds it throws an error. Often a sensor is bad and it still doesn’t throw
an error, classic example being oxygen. If you can smell gas and have a
rough ride, it’s likely ignition (gas usually means non-ignited fuel).
Having two of your wires in the wrong order will do that too

hoohoohoblin says:

I will try new wires and plugs and see if it makes a difference. The check
engine light doesn’t come on, so I figured it wasn’t a problem with wires
or spark plugs.

Dead Ballo says:

Hey, is your module for a ‘W’ engine? The ignition on my ’94 Astro has been
cutting out as I drive. Usually a power cycle gets it running again (no
need to restart), but the issue is vexing. I replaced everything except the
ECM

Dead Ballo says:

I had a Chevy V6 do this and basically two cylinders weren’t firing. Check
your firing order and make sure each plug fires. You could have a bad plug,
bad gap, bad wire/connector, bad rotor, or a weak coil. You can also
inspect your plugs to see which ones are wet (not firing). I found an ECM
on ebay and will likely buy it, even though this van is ancient.

I have a 1995 astro, strong smell of gas, engine was struggling, smoke out
of the exhuast at times…. ended up being the spider assembly. My local
mechanic replaced it and the problem was solved. Good luck to you…
whatever the cause may be.

did it fix the problem?

MrMusicDreamz says:

I have an Astro also. I replaced the Spider and fpr. It got me through
emissions good. Later on it got real shaky at 45 to 55 mph. All the problem
was the ignition wires! Did you replace those? If not, look at it running
at night. You might see a fireworks show. There are other culprits too. I
have a Chevy Lumina that smells gassy out of the exhaust. It might be egr
valve, map sensor, o2 sensor. Smell your oil and see if it smells like
fuel. That’s how I deduced my Spider.

hoohoohoblin says:

Thanks. I am glad you got it fixed. My van still stinks, but I don’t drive
it much.

hoohoohoblin says:

Nope. The van runs rough and stinks like gas. I keep replacing things, but
it doesn’t help. Eventually I’ll find the cause of the problem. In the
meantime I’ll keep posting videos showing how to replace the parts I
replace, and when I’ve finally fixed it I’ll make one big video telling how
to fix a rough running Safari or Astro van.

hoohoohoblin says:

Thanks. I haven’t tried replacing the plug wires yet. I did rebuild the
fuel pressure regulator and replaced the injectors, but it didn’t fix the
problem.

MrMusicDreamz says:

I bet if you start it up in the dark, you’ll see sparks jumping around in
places. It’s easy to change the wires out. I crawled under my van to remove
and replace them. Of course, you need the cover off to get the wire clips
opened. My wires were only $20. Something else too, after you work with
electrical issues you should be sure to disconnect the battery for about 30
minutes to reset your engine’s specifications. I wish you the best!
