All fuel pumps will make some noise, but not one that’s annoyingly loud. If noise has developed over time it can be 1 of 2 things: Normal fuel pump wear over time w/ noise indicating impending fuel pump failure. Could also be fuel tank contamination affecting the pump. This scars inside of pump & can make it noisy. Unfortunately there’s no way to make the pump quiet again. Only fix for it is to replace pump. If you replace, make sure to clean the inside of the fuel tank or it will happen again.

My 1997 GMC Yukon has a high pitched whine that comes from right where the gas tank is. Could this be the problem ?

Hello: That’s hard to say as the it varies widely depending on what part of the country you’re in, the type of shop, etc. Labor time data says that it’s approximately a three hour job. From there it would depend on the other factors mentioned earlier. Thanks for watching.
