Thank you for the reply. Yes I did try reverse. I think my first comment may have been spam filtered… the noise I’m referring to is a knock which is relative in tempo to vehicle speed, and sounds like a cv joint, but only occurrs in 2hi.

1aauto says:

Did you try to put the truck in reverse and back down the road a little bit, sometimes that will disengage it for you. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

andrewferguson33 says:

Continued… further to that point, it is currently stuck in 4low. Shifting from 2hi to 4hi and back was no problem, and i got it in and out of 4low a couple of times, but now I just can’t hit the right combination to get it out. Do you think I would be on the right track to replace the shift cable? The forums are telling me that the noise may be caused by the front diff failing to disengage completely. Am I thinking straight here? Thank you again for the video and thank you for your time.

1aauto says:

That system is both vacuum operated and electrical, I’m not sure if you would be able to convert it to mechanical.

Tom Andrews says:

ok I opened my hood if you look towards the brake booster(front right) there is a black ball attached to the hood and no tubes attached, and no tubes near by. when I went under my battery there was no tube connecting to the back of the actuator I ended up finding the tube and had to make an extension, then I connected it and then it sucked in along with the cable when I put it in 4*4 . is there anyway I can just convert it to manual.

1aauto says:

Tom check for a vacuum leak in the engine bay. I used to have a 96 Jimmy and my 4WD stopped working due to a vacuum leak. My leak ended up being on the drivers side, there was some type of a vacuum ball on the hood near the firewall, that had a cracked vacuum hose. Once I fixed it my 4WD was back. There’s also a vacuum actuator in that system that tends to fail. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Tom Andrews says:

so the actuator cable locks the 4 wheel drive in? I have a 96 jimmy and my 4 wheel drive wont work I press one of the buttons and youll here it shift in but when you go to spin the wheel only the back spin

1aauto says:

You can view the cable right through this link: 1aauto.com/search?words=1AFWM00028

jason smith says:

do you sell the plastic piece that the cable goes into on your website?

1aauto says:

You may have to replace the cable because it might have felt free at the time but could possibly be getting hung up.

mavello sikey says:

I have a 2003 chevy blazer, I replaced the actuator but not the cable because the cable felt pretty free, but when i was driving down the road i heard a clicking noise coming from my front diff, sounds like 4wd is partially engaged, any way to disengage it from clicking for now ?

1aauto says:

You may want to take a look at the transfer case.

Diane Mangert says:

Heard a LOUD BAAM, and No More 4 wheel drive, had 2000 BLAZER Watch the diaphragm depress and pull the cable Checked at the Trans case that the other end was connected and cable was moving freely in sheath, All appeared well, So I jacked front wheels off the floor,It works pulling cable by hand, Press 4×4 Hi and they locked in,. Put it all back together, Pulled truck out into the yard AND NO 4×4 Front Drive, WTH?

Many thanks.

There’s a vacuum actuator that tends to go bad over time on these trucks, you may want to check it. Also check all of the vacuum tubing under the door for leaks or cracks. I have a 96 Jimmy that had a vacuum line unplug near the drivers side under the hood. I had to reconnect it and it worked fine after that. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

I have a 2002 chevy s-10 my problem is that when i push the button in the cab the light stays on all that works I even here a clicking or something when i push the the 4 hi button but I’m pretty sure that is does not engage in 4 wheel drive when it works it really steers funny so I ‘m not sure what to do now

Awesome, thanks for checking us out on YouTube. We carry a ton of parts on our website with free shipping. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

vwertigo says:

Thanks for the reply. Picked up a new cable (by the same manufacturer) and the diaphragm side of the cable would depress as it should into the dust boot. It seems the first one was in fact defective. Thanks to your videos and expert advice I now have my Jimmy offroad capable again! Thank you!

1aauto says:

You should be able to install it just like the factory one. You may want to measure it against the factory one that you have to see if they are the same size. If the new ones shorter you may also want to see if you were also given the right cable for your truck. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

vwertigo says:

In the video you push the cable down much further than I am able to do with a replacement I just bought. Also I can’t get the lower end of the cable to protrude enough to guide it into the shaft. I am using a Dorman 600-601. Why wouldn’t the cable depress like you did with merely a thumb?

1aauto says:

We currently do not have an auto repair video that explains this. If you have a service manual for the truck, it may tell you.

coonman4444 says:

I have a quick question for you. When the vacuum actuator pulls the cable, what kind of distance should the cable move. Everthing on my 4wd is working the cable is pulling but i am not sure if it is pulling far enough……..

Garrett Kinch says:

My 4 wheel drive wasn’t working, and I almost bought a new electric motor for the transfer case but it turned out to be the transfer case control module on the passenger side kick panel, it’s simply had a bad electrical connection, when I would press the button, it would make a clicking sound but would not engage the electric motor, so with a small piece of copper wire, and some electric grease, it popped right into 4 wheel drive.

1aauto says:

You could try turning one of the front tires by hand to see if the other turns. If not you may want to inspect the gears.

Jason Palma says:

I have a 97 s10 pickup with a 4.3. my 4wd wouldent engage and then bang a loud pop and its would engage. Now it this point it wont engage at all. I look up under the truck when its in 4wd and on the gas a little and the front driveshaft is spinning. Driveshaft spins tires do not. I figure the pinion gear or gears inside can be blown. Or the actuator system can be malfuntioning. ANY IDEAS? Note this happened at cold weather. Thank you!!!!!

1aauto says:

We currently do not have an auto repair video that shows you how to do this. Typically there can be quite a bit involved when fixing a vehicle that has this much damage to it. You may want to check the frame to see if it needs to be professionally straightened out, so that you can make all of your necessary repairs and have everything line up correctly. Hope this helps. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

MadJesusMinistries says:

I bought a 2002 Ford Focus ZX3 that was wrecked in the front. Can you show me how to replace radiator core support and line every thing up? And also how to wire clockspring to make horn and turn signal work without new air bag?

1aauto says:

Also watch this video if that doesn’t work, because this shift actuator runs off of vacuum too, and it’s a common part to fail. We carry new ones on our website 1aauto.com 888-844-3393 Part Number: 1AFWA00002

1aauto says:

You may want to check in the engine compartment to see if there is a vacuum line that is split of has become disconnected, which could cause the 4WD to not engage. I had a 99 Jimmy that this happened to. On that truck the vacuum line that goes to a vacuum reservoir (I believe) on the drivers side near the hood broke. I connected it back up and it fixed the 4WD. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Tim Button says:

I have a 2001 blazer that when you push the 4×4 button you can hear the clicken underneath or when you push 4 low you hear clicken underneath the blazer and it goes into low gear like it should, but with all that said the front wheels never engage or lock in it is only the back wheels spinning

RedneckJayson says:

is there a way to get rid on the vacuum assemble all together and make it all mechanical?

Stas Larkin says:

very very very good and helpful video. Thank you AAUTO. You saved me time

brianlarocque1234 says:
