GMC and CHEVY truck easy fuel pump fix – make a hatch

I was on my way to the dump one day and my fuel pump went out. Frustrating… This is my aircraft mechanic way of fixing my fuel pump. Airplanes have lots of…

My $60 ebay fuel pump went out again – sort of. I really appreciated the hatch there since I troubleshot the problem to the pump and then it just took a couple minutes to get it out and find that the internal pump fuel line had popped off. I re-secured it on the pump motor and my truck runs fine again. 3 years on the $60 pump and 2 tank drops saved so far.

RealRekcin:
Classic symptoms of a leaking fuel pressure regulator. You can borrow a pressure gauge at some autoparts stores to check; if it drops fast (doesn’t sound like it in your case) it is likely the checkvalve if it drops slow it is likely the pressure regulator leaking.

good job yak, don’t need to but will if have to

John Staudt says:

Used a $10 air chisel from Walmart that I had in the already had in the tool box. Worked great!!!

Robert Albright says:

Should be a shrader valve under the dog house that you can use to check the fuel line pressure with a cheap gage from harbor frieght.

yak55x says:

Harborfreightdotcom has an electric cut off tool. Might be nice since you won’t need a compressor but it costs a little bit more.

epidemia2007 says:

Hi I just look for the tool and I need to have an air compressor, can you suggest something else that I can use without the air compressor.THANKS.

yak55x says:

I used a 3 Inch High Speed Cut-Off Tool from Harbor Freight $8.99. Item #47077

I reached up under the truck and put a wet towel over the pump and made sure not to cut very deep.

jan taverner says:

got a question what did you use to cut the hatch out…

yak55x says:

Let me know what you figure out. It could be my next problem too. 🙂

RealRekcin says:

Thanks for the reply. It is weird to me too, because if the pump were not working why would it keep running so well once it got started? I mean I can go down the road and punch the accelerator and it takes off well (for a van). But it seems if the pressure was low it wouldn’t take off like that. Anyway, I’m just hoping I don’t have to cut a hole in it. 🙂 Someone suggested injector cleaner and I tried that, but it didn’t seem to help.

yak55x says:

It might be the fuel pump. Seems odd though to pump the accelerator since there’s no accelerator pump per se, but the computer may be doing the same thing with the fuel injection when you pump the pedal. I would check the fuel pressure and if it’s low, replace the pump. If the fuel pressure is fine I’d look into the fuel spider since they seem to go out a lot on these trucks as well. Note, I’m an airplane mechanic not a car mechanic so take this with a grain of salt.

RealRekcin says:

Great job. I have a question that you may know the answer to though. I have a 99 Astro Van and it will start and run fine, but I have to pump the accelerator fast and furious, for quite a while to get it started. But as I said once it is running it runs fine and will start again if I shut it off for a short period of time. But if I let it sit for a couple days I will have to pump it like CRAZY again to get it started. Do you think that would be a fuel pump or something else?

Benjamin Chung says:

Looks like I will be doing the same for an SUV with same issue.

Benjamin Chung says:

Sure beats paying hundreds just to get access to the pump. They should have placed an opening plate cover there with bolts to make removal and installation easier for everyone concerned. But they either overlooked this fact or deliberately decided to make life tougher for everyone.

TOE MAN says:

That is a great idea, thanks.

quickshotphoto says:

Freekin awesome !!!

Barry Neyrey says:

Even though I have a blazer, the look of what the tank and pump will look like above is a great help. Thanks.

siege Caviness says:

Thanks For All The Info On This. How Many Corrugations Did You Count Over From Where You Put The Fuel In?

yak55x says:

Just look under the truck at the fuel tank. I assume the fuel pump is in the tank on that one too but make sure. I didn’t have any measurements to go by when I did it so I counted the corrugations in the bed. I studied it out for quite a while before doing it and used an air powered abrasive cutter from Harbor Freight with some water and made sure not to cut deeply so as not to hit a fuel line. Just be careful and I’m sure it’s the same.

Every truck should have a locking hatch with access to fuel pump and storage.

whines63 says:

not as dumb as you think

whines63 says:

Good idea, you would think some one at GM would have been thoughtful enough to think of this by making a access panel in the truck bed to get to the fuel pump, this way you do not have to go thru hell and high water to replace the fuel pump. I hope you engineers at GM see these comments.

GeorgeVeld says:

I have seem mecanics do this for years if the manufactures had half a brain the would buld them in But hey i guess idiots like you love to drop a grand on replacing a fuel pup so gofor it androp your tank with all the busted bolts an lines at least i will be done for 300 bucks so who is the dumbass now MORRON

1wicked2008 says:

i had to do that ..only because i was two states away stuck on the highway..but i wouldn’t do it if it was sitting in my driveway ..now i have to protect the wires with rubber from getting water on them when it rains..not a good ideal

sam k says:

check to be sure the voltage is right going to the pump. That can end a new pump pretty quick if it ain’t sitting at 12 v. gray and black, the brown is the sending unit. Those harnesses tend to fail and the grounds get corroded easily.Sometimes good to add a redundant ground and be sure as I’m sure you know, but I should mention it, to replace with new filter each and every time you do a pump and every year thereafter. Hope that helps a bit.

greenspiraldragon says:

But then how are they going to sell you the expensive dealer repair and the expensive oem pump?

Curtis Needham says:

Great idea, I’m on the way out the door with a sawzall.

Biggfatty405 says:

Ok so we just made our hach.. and found out that in order to find the fuel pump on a 37 Gal tank you must got 12 inches instead of 4 and a half.. other than that.. way better than removing the box or the tank… just a tip incase someone else trys this awesome idea

yak55x says:

Nice, glad to see I’m not just crazy lol.

snowman3700 says:

i have been doing the same thing for years on my plow trucks its great with a plastic bed liner

jordon wellman says:

i have a 94 chevy 1500 v6 s it the same

johnheather1 says:

That’s beautiful … might do that on my blazer … put hinges on it and a latch to screw it down

yak55x says:

Yes, if it’s completely clogged. Seems unlikely but it’s a good place to start troubleshooting.

yak55x says:

Thanks lol. I think the bean counters win the arguments. With airplanes they make lots of money in the air and none on the ground so the bean counters see a great deal of value to hatches. With cars it’s just the customers problem.

wafrederick says:

Not really.Fuel pumps get weak overtime

john lopez says:

will a clogged filter cause A reading of zero on a fuel pressure gauge?

brent underwood says:

all you gotta do is buy a fuel pump for a transam or camaro thats and just change the connectors 🙂

john lopez says:

arts with starter fuild and stays running as long as you dont rev the engine can you help man or point me in the right direction?
