Hey, everyone. Ryan here at etrailer. Today on our 2024 GMC Sierra 3500, we’re gonna be checking out the Gen-Y Offset Goose Ball kit for trucks that have the OEM prep package. So it’s pretty convenient nowadays. A lot of these late model trucks are coming right outta the factory with these prep packages and it makes using or towing a gooseneck trailer or even a 5th wheel trailer for that matter, extremely easy because more or less you just take your hitch, drop it in the bed of your truck, lock it down and you’re good to go. This kit, what the difference is compared to some of the other ones is it’s going to have an offset ball, meaning the ball is going to sit towards the back of the truck an additional 5 inches.

And so it’ll work with short bed trucks as well as long bed trucks. So for those of you with a short bed, you know, that may be beneficial if your trailer hangs over. You know, let’s say if you had a 5th wheel type camper that you put a goose box on, convert it to a gooseneck. What can happen with those short beds is you might run into cab clearance issues, meaning when you make real tight turns, if your trailer over hangs up here, it could potentially hit your cab corners and damage ’em, right So having that offset is going to help combat that. But even if you have a long bed, you know it can be useful as well.

Maybe your trailer’s set up in a custom way, something along those lines, or you wanna still be able to completely open up your tailgate with your trailer hooked up. This could be the difference that you need. Buy that little bit of extra space to allow you to do that type of thing. Now with that said, it’s gonna have a 2-5/16 ball, which is extremely common for gooseneck trailers and a 25,000 pound maximum gross trailer weight rating. So keep that in mind.

I do always like to recommend, it’s always a good idea to check in your truck’s owner’s manual to make sure it can handle that amount of weight safely. Now, something that is really important, if this is a kit you end up wanting to go with, it’s really important that you pick up some safety chain openings if you don’t have them already, because this Gen-Y setup is not gonna come included with them and you definitely want ’em not only for safety reasons but legal ones as well. That way you can drop these in and hook up the safety chains from your trailer. These ones here are made by CURT and you can grab ’em separately, really stout. The way they work, extremely simple, drop in, rotate ’em, put a pin in there and your clip through there.

And that’s really all there is to it. Now if you end up using, you know, picking these CURT ones up, something to pay attention to because they are so stout, if you happen to have a smaller size hook on your trailer for the safety chains, you might come into some issues. This one’s labeled 5/16 for example, and although it’ll fit around there, if I we inchesre to latch it, it’s kind of a pain to get it off. So something to think about. If yours are a little bit smaller like this, you might be better off upgrading to, you know, the next size up or something like that. The way you install this is pretty straightforward. There’s a pin here you pull out and this handle lift up and rotate that. And I like to, especially the first time leave these pieces a little loose so you kind of slide ’em and arrange ’em to where they line up. This will drop into place here just like that and that T handle rotates, locks down, put our pin through there and then with these, you know, you can snug ’em up and lock those down as well. Other than that, you know, not really a whole lot to this. So ultimately, if you’re someone that’s looking for that offset ball, this is gonna be a great solution for you. Gen-Y makes really high quality products. If you’re familiar with the towing world at all, you’ve probably heard about ’em and that’s because a lot of the stuff they do is top-notch and this is really no exception.
