DIY 1998 GMC Jimmy Radiator Replacement

DIY 1998 GMC Jimmy Radiator Replacement

The radiator in my wife’s 98 Jimmy took a shit so I had to replace it. The cheap plastic end cap cracked at the seams. Who ever thought plastic was a good id…

I’ve had the exact problems with mine! Right up to the rearview mirror falling off, thanks for the video.

Hi Larry, I replaced my radiator about 6 months ago. Now it doesn’t hold any fluid. I did not replace the hoses when I changed it, because they seemed to be fine. After I changed the radiator, it seemed to never hold fluid. I fill the reservoir weekly. I want this fixed, what should I look for when looking for the leak? From where could the fluid be leaking? Thanks.

Larry W says:

Depends on the mileage and age of hoses. If you bend them when they are disconnected and you see cracks, then yes. Or if there are soft spots or if they are full of corrosion, then yes. Either way, its good time to replace them and the thermostat. No fluid will come out of the lines. It only circulates when the engine is running. The coolant cools the fluids thru a series of wound tubes inside each end cap of the radiator, sealed system.

VolklRunner says:

Question: I am changing my sons radiator tomorrow; Sunday 3-3-2013. He has a 1999 Jimmy 184K miles.
1) Do you recommend I replace both top and bottom hoses while I’m at it?
2) Does tranny oil and engine oil come out of the cooling lines? Or does radiator fluid cool the tranny and engine oil???
Thanks for the video, it helps.

Steven Simonson says:

It helped me. Just changed the one on my blazer. Thanks

Larry W says:

It’s not bolted anywhere. It floats between the bottom rubber cushion mounts and the upper plastic shroud. Once the shroud and lines are removed, it lifts straight out.

Larry W says:

This video does show the steps. Simply watching it does not automatically make you a mechanic. You must posses some understanding of mechanical things before you attempt repairs. If you’re looking for a video that tells you which way to turn the wrench to loosen a fastener, this is not it! In that case, leave it to the professionals.

btrail333 says:

lousy video, does not show step by step. not at all helpful. bunch of babbling related to nothing…

f5chop says:

mine cracked in same spot 04zr2

Edward Rooney says:

and how does the radiator come out? is it bolted anywere besides the hoses and lines? wtf

MGrass420 says:

I’ve got a 92 Jimmy. Do you think the instilation will be the same as your 98? The radiator and the lines seem to be in the same place as mine. I’m trying to save a few bucks by doing it myself. Any suggestions are appriciated.

fernandezsmith says:

Thnks this helps! Whoever disliked is a asshole

klmbmiller says:

Great video it really helped thanks. i have the same problem with the crack in the same spot.

Ashlysbabyboi says:

I just watched you video and i want to say THANK YOU! my wife let her grandpa barrow our blazer and he brought it back with a cracked radiator and well i may not have a new one but im saving your video for when i do change it.. and i agree the “Blazer/Jimmy/Bravada” they are know for having issues but they are always little things… For the most part… a Hub water pump door panel wiper motor intake gaskets mainly little things..

But NICE VIDEO DUDE!!

gamerdude239 says:

nativebrother21 says:

I see your air conditioning lines are off.

Larry W says:

should be very similar if not the same.

Will this work on a ’98 Chevy Blazer?

tweed187187 says:

yAre you saying if it’s the hose and i have to replace them to clamp them first?they are metal lines so i couldnt clamp them.ive been real sick so i havent been able to get back under but when i feal better maybe it will show where its leaking from when i put fluid back in.oh do you know if the bottom of the power steering pump can leak?i know the hose is but i couldnt tell if the wet on the pump came from the hose right beside it or ont, thanks.

Larry W says:

Definitely sounds like the lines. Follow them from the rad to the trans. Do not run the trans low on fluid or you will burn the clutch packs out! The lines r under pressure so if you must use a hose to fix it, double clamp each end and check for leaks. Check fluid with truck running, level, and warm. Top off with quality fluid.

tweed187187 says:

i just got a 99 jimmy and after driving a couple time all most the transmission fluid is gone.nothing on the ground though but all over under the fron end.does this sound like the cooling lines need replaced?i dont have the cash to be getting another tranny.thanks for the vid.

william torres says:

compared to any other suv of its year and size yes the best especialy to build one up chevy is legendary for hiddin power you just got to find em

CiCi Morris says:

the stock radiators on the chevy’s from 98 to 2004 wer prone to cracking….and so i just payed 20 bucks more and got an all aluminum 4 core radiator…..did it just like you did

Boris Ferguson says:

Ok thanks I will check that out. Thanks for the info.

Larry W says:

Not specifically. Some of these models have an interior light over ride switch. You push it to keep the interoir lights off for when you’re doing things like vacuuming it out or working with the door open. Look in your owner’s manual. Check the switch that dims and turns on the interior lights. Near it might be a switch to activate this function. Sometimes its not obvious what a button does or one button has several functions.

Boris Ferguson says:

do you have any info on 97 chevy blazer. I had many electrical problems mainly the interior lights not working unless the truck is switched on. Any ideas?

Larry W says:

Excellent and thank you! Glad I could help.

Larry W says:

The vortec engine is very reliable, smooth, and powerful. It was the fit and finish that ruined this vehicle for me. Too many little problems like door switches, blower fans, radiator, brakes, rear view mirror falling off, wiper motor and on and on. All within a few months of owning it. It seemed something always needed repairing or replacing. These were not GMC’s best SUV’s in my opinion.

8Ball20101 says:

Are these cars reliable ? im thinking of buying one spark me when you get this.

Larry W says:

You’re welcome. Glad I could help. Thanks to you for the sub! Have any other vehicle related questions, just shoot me a message, Id be glad to help.

syonara50 says:

I have the same problem with miscellaneous issues on my ’98 Jimmy. Replaced the radiator on mine around 110k miles and now have to replace the blower motor. =P This video helped me visualize the project a little better, so thanks! Gotta agree it is a nice SUV when it’s working properly though.
