Wells CounterPoint Ep. 21 GM Throttle Body Repair (P2135)

***Survey*** https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WellsTech

GM’s electronic throttle bodies have been problematic for quite some time. For a while, the repair was an entire throttle body assembly. In this video I show the new fix; you how to replace the TPS sensor and clean the throttle body bore.

Sam Sen says:

Can a bad TPS cause car to run only in 1st gear? Or is that some other problem?

Sam Sen says:

How do you remove the original GE's TPS that are rivet and not having clips like the one you show here?

how many miles on this old TB?

Say me please what is tha valve position if power is off??I think the valve must be closed.

Andy Lake says:

Thanks a million-very helpful. Will the new sensor cover come with its own cover gasket?

americanstrife says:

Very informative and thank you for sharing your knowledge. My '05 Silverado 6.0L has a coolant tube running through the assembly and I would like to avoid draining coolant in order to remove it for cleaning. Can I just remove the two torx head bolts holding the throttle plate and slide it out for cleaning as long as I put it back exactly how it was?

Alexander Gonzalez says:

Hello Mike,
Toyota corolla throttle body sensor back probe key on; grd wire reads0.01v opened close throttle no response; Middle wire signal reads 12.36v; bat 12.65v; 5volt ref wire reads 1.67v no throttle resistance.

Ohm meter disconnected connector exposing throttle pins clipping grd and signal pin to ohm meter it reads 1.814ohms open/close no response is this a defective sensor?
Respectfully,
Alexander Gonzalez.

Horrifying Story: (oh, and read below – you can have this fixed for free)
4 kids in the Yukon…
Driving on a HWY, Stabilitrack shuts down, ENGINE REDUCES to 50% (ON A HWY!!), abs lights flash, check engine light comes on and flashes – dash is blinking and going haywire.
Yukon is idling BADLY at 20 Mph (just shaking horribly and unable to speed up) then an oncoming van almost hit me and my children… I had literally 30 seconds to respond on a hwy in a YUKON filled with kids!!
Then as I stopped and tried to turn – the truck SURGES. RPMs are going crazy and the truck is trying to lunge forward!
I was shaking and had my foot completely down on the brake trying to make sure the truck does not surge forward into traffic.
I pull off a side road, the truck is just misfiring, shaking and rpms are crazy. I turn it off asap and sit in silence unable to speak, trying to catch my breath and calm down.

The situation could have been worse. I could have been hit. The vehicle instantaneously shut down 50% on a hwy. Do they not understand the dangers in this? It was all over Throttle Sensor!!? It makes no sense. GMC needs to fix this.

Horrifying event.

Later at Home: Ran an OBD and it gave me the code for TPS. Called GMC to report the incident and see if (due to my extremely scary incident) they would cover the TPS failure. It turns out they replace the sensor for FREE if you have a 2006 or above AND under $120,000 miles. I was at $130,000 Do you think they sympathized?
NOPE.
Guy at GMC hotline proceeded to ask me if I was a certified auto technician. (Because evidently a dumb women can't run codes?? Ass!) And then tell me I will have to pay for this fully out of my pocket because I was over $120,000 miles.

This is EXTREMELY dangerous! He had no comment and did not offer any other help, advice, or recommendations except he could schedule an appointment so I could pay OUT OF POCKET for this OBVIOUS GMC FAILURE!
Just thought I would share my story in case it happens to anyone else. This is NOT rare and evidently GMC is "aware" of the situation but does nothing about it.

Brandi Ordaz says:

FYI You have to press super hard to get the clips on! You're not doing anything wrong – it is really hard. Order is important…I guess.

Hello Mike. I have a 2004 Nissan Murano with the code p2135: TP sensor code. The vehicle accelerator pedal keeps being unresponsive. When this happen, you let it cool off, and you regain acceleration. I am asking myself how the tp sensor can trigger this unresponsiveness when it only reports the throttle opening and speed. Do I have a short somewhere?

bamaborn74 says:

I have a question… my 2003 5.3 Flex w/ 180k+ is giving random misfire. I've changed: plugs, wires, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, MAF, throttle body sensor and in the process of changing the coils and the entire throttle body.My question is: should the middle sprocket/gear freely slide inside the throttle body. Or should it be firmly affixed to the stem that it is on inside the throttle body?Thank you.

Mike Flo says:

On my 2015 Nissan Versa the dealership they told me it was my throttle body, while o'Reilly and autozone told me it was the mass airflow sensor

Crash Tv says:

FYI: the new sensors are natorious for "failing within spec"… NTSB is currently investigating GM for build in a bypass within this updated sensor…meaning it can fail without throwing an engine light….be mindful of symptoms for the future

This does not work at all, finally had to the Idle Relearn Reset with a Snap On Modis; without it the actual and indicated angles are not synchronized correctly no matter what you try to do otherwise.

NO NO NO NO BRAKE CLEANER!!!!!
IT WILL DESTROY THE COATING ON THE THROTTLE PLATE!!!
ONLY USE SENSOR SAFE THROTTLE BODY CLEANER!!!

Jeffrey Gagnon says:

Can a throttle body be safely opened manually (pushing the flap like you did) while it is still installed?

I cleaned mine but because it was in the closed position I only did the outside.

Good explanation Mike

Suggest that we all start wearing gloves to protect ourselves from the brakekleen being absorbed through the skin.

reweydewy says:

The teeth on the black gear which is connected to the throttle plate looks likes it's worn out. Looks almost like it's worn where it is normally used which is between idle and 70% throttle. Is this normal for say a new throttle body?

Hayward's Automotive says:

I've had good luck with the kit and the idle relearn went great with all but one. It would high idle and if I put it in gear it would idle down and stay there until I blipped the throttle and the high idle would come back. Cleared the KAM several times no luck. Drove it and every time I went to slow down it was at high idle, come to a stop and idle would return to normal idle, hit throttle and high idle. It had the high idle when it came in before the TPS was changed. Reprogrammed the PCM and car idled perfectly and it was the only thing that made sense. If you ever run into it there are several forums like iATN, Suretrack, etc where the fix is reprogram the PCM
